Just Can't Get Enough ....

.... of San Diego these days.

Mini-vacation thanks to Runner Kiddo's. "A" honor roll for everyone this year meant - Disneyland, Baseball and the Beach. It was also a surprise for them all, from Mom and Dad. Fun how only one of them thought we might be going to Disneyland, even after we took the 57 over the 55.

If you live in SoCal (Orange County) or drive to D-Land from the I-15 you know the difference between the "55" and the "57". One is the Beaches Freeway the other Angels/Disneyland. Well, only one "A" honor rollee was on to us at that point.

Anyway, my wife and I actually timed it perfectly for once. We got everything ready for the trip just before picking up kiddos from a half day, last day. Husky Puppy to Doggy Hotel, Packed, House ready and Suburban Truckster ready to go. We left straight from School to the Freeway. All the kiddos knew, we were going somewhere - the beach most likely. Once in the Parking lot of the Hotel we told them - 2-3 minutes of scream and cheers later we finally got them inside.

Fun! One day is all we need now for Disneyland. After going once a year for the last 6-7 years and running it twice - no matter how much we love it, it is getting smaller and smaller to us. Yet, still we have fun every time.

Running it? Yep, this one was weird for me. The last two visits there, had me running the Half Marathon the day of, or my family running the 5K the day before. Strange not to be hobbling around the Park after 13 miles. Even more odd? When I showered each morning at our favorite Residence Inn - the smell of the complimentary soap in the shower had me ready thinking race, and getting to the Start at 3:00 AM. Even though this time NO race and it was 7:00 AM. Fun how smells can bring on intense memories. Do they do that for you?

Beach? not much this time. It was hazy, and almost foggy most of the few days we were there. Baseball?

This time NO Angels. Padres. We took a slow drive down to San Diego soaking in what beachtime we could on our way to Petco Field. Even though it was not my Daughters favorite team, or mine - or well anyone in our family - we had a blast. Nice seats in a nice ballpark. Fun! No, the home team did not win, but it was still fun to eat some peanuts and Cracker Jacks rooting for them. Plus, we got free caps on giveaway night, SD Padres T-shirts and a sock monkey for Runner Girl. Not the Angels Rally Monkey, but close enough.

Again, this was not only our first trip to Disneyland in awhile without going for a Race. It was our first trip anywhere in a long while that did not involve a race. My older boys were trying to find anything that looked like an Expo, and my Runner Girl kept pointing out any runner she saw to cheer me up. Yes, I was going through withdrawals some. Traveling through Laguna Hills we found a Soccer Game going on though. We briefly watched two really good Girls teams that looked like U12 age. That helped ease things for me some. :) Of course we had fun regardless!!

Next races?

NO Seattle Rock and Roll. I registered. Yet, things are not happening in work schedule and life for us to make that trip. We will most likely be going up to visit Seattle and then the Oregon Coast in August.

Running with the Devil likely the next one. It is the same day as Seattle. Yet, only a 15-20 minute drive from the house. It is a local Calico Racing event that involves an Ultra Marathon, Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K. It is out by Lake Meade on paved trails I know all too well. And, NO I will not be doing the Ultra. It is called Running with the Devil due to the heat. It should be Triple digits at race time. All though this year? might not? We have been in the 80's and low 90's when we should be 101 of late.

San Diego America's Finest City Half Marathon - I really like San Diego (duh!). This will be race number three this year in the area, Carlsbad in Jan, Rock and Roll a few weeks ago, and now Aug. I know we might as well move there. We are working on it. Some day?

Lake Tahoe? Thinking about this one as a Wedding Anniversary getaway for my wife and I. Yep, she would run too. They have everything from Ultra Marathons to 5k's and even Kayaking going on that week in Sept. Should be a fun experience and great way to celebrate year 13 of happy bliss with my best friend and wife - doing 13 miles.

Outside of July, I have a race each month, but don't forget June will have two. July will be a month of training in Triple digits. Plus, I get to be a spectator for a race. I am planning on getting out to Death Valley to root on Badwater racers at the Start. I also might slip in a shorty 5K Fourth of July race. So, it will not be a down month at all.

Hope everyone has a great Summer! Keep running!

I am pledging to be a better blogger again as well. More postings and more reading of yours. Sorry for the downtime!

Cheers!

Man, lots packed in this one!
I don't know HOW you slipped that surprise past the kids. :)

It must have felt weird to be there and not racing. Smells do that for me too- but not usually for racing, just other stuff.

Our weather has been a lot cooler than usual too- well, wetter anyway. Even for Oregon. Maybe it's a good year for you to do the ultra!

Hey, everybody gets busy. No worries. :)

Very cool to surprise your kiddos with the trip like that. I bet they loved it! I totally get them pointing out runners to you...my kids are always pointing out bikes to me when we go on a trip without mine because they know I'm missing it. Now I have three bikes to miss. I wonder if it'll be worse? :)

You have a lot of cool stuff coming up. I'm not exactly sure what's on my schedule race-wise anytime soon. I guess maybe I ought to look back at the schedule. I've been in a little bit of a running drought since the marathon...hard time keeping motivated for it, plus now it has to battle with biking for its time.

All on the "A" honor roll? Those are some pretty spectacular and smart kiddos you have there :) Glad that you all enjoyed Disneyland.

I cannot say enough good about San Diego. I was born in the old Balboa Park Naval Hospital, so it was really cool to start a half-marathon in that same park 27 years later :) Beautiful city, beautiful weather...man. I can certainly empathize with your insatiable appetite for that city!

Sad to hear that you'll be missing the Seattle RNR. I've heard it's a decent course. I would've considered it, except a childhood friend is getting married in Boston. When do you think you'll be coming up through? Just so you know, there's the Seafair Torchlight 10k on July 30.

Finally, an early congratulations to you and your wife on 13 years of marriage!

Happy summer and happy running to you!
