Bad Day in San Diego?

I just can't. I just can't have a bad day in San Diego. Steve Martin used to say, "you just can't feel sad while playing the banjo." San Diego is that for me.

Last year, my first San Diego Rock and Roll Half Marathon - well - kicked my butt. It was not a pleasant experience. Yet, of course it was in San Diego though. No matter how bad The 163 Freeway concrete beat me up - the city and beaches was all the Grace I needed to Redeem a bad run. Thank you running Gods.

Yesterday, however, I did the kicking.

Very nice race. First off, I crossed the Finish this year wanting to do it again. Last year? I limped across the finish - literally. This year - 20 minutes faster and I really should've done the Full. Yet, with little training for even the Half, I was able to sail through it this year. My only issue (and a big one), throwing up near mile 3. Yep, I did it, just after crossing in towards Balboa Park. A first. I have never Ralphed during a race. Wanted to once during my first Arizona Rock and Roll.

Oh well? Not sure why. Possible bad combo of taking two Endurolytes earlier than normal in a race, washed down with Cytomax. Plus, my body for some reason reacts oddly to humidity these days. It was not that bad too be honest - the humidity. It was also on the coolish side early on. Yet, I guess living and training in single digit humidity in the desert is a personal handicap near the coast.

My training? Non existent. My last double digit run, the month before at The OC Half Marathon. Yet, after getting the yucks out of my system - really strong. I crossed the Finish wishing I would've done what I registered for - the Full 26.2. It was very weird in some ways. No hard training. Lots of shorty 5K's with Husky Puppy, and 10 days in a row of NO running. Yet, not only did I really kick out a strong Half, flying past most everyone in the last mile especially. I really felt like doing it ALL again. I wanted MORE! Much more.

Achilles? Nothing. Never once was it a problem. Right knee? Only in the last few miles did I feel anything. Post race, it felt like it was going to lock up some, but walking and stretching seemed to ease that.

Today?

Ready for more. In fact, no rest. I am going take Husky Puppy out for 5K run tonight. Yes, I feel stiff in all the typical places, but NO pain. The drive home was a little painful at times, but today - strong.

Next race?

Not sure?

More San Diego to come ....

Cheers!

Wow, glad it went so well with so little training! Especially after last year's suffer-fest. Congratulations on finishing strong! :)

Reading this makes me so happy (excepting the puking, of course!). It could not have been a more beautiful day or place for a run, although *much* warmer than my Seattle spring has prepared me for. What a lovely course, too. I'm so glad that you had such a strong race, and that you are feeling so strong so quickly after it! Congrats congrats congrats! :)
