Look What I Came Home On ....

PAIN!

Sent me to the ER at 4:00 AM. Pain woke me up 30 minutes prior. Pain kept me from walking out of bed. Hobble, hobble, hobble.

Okay, I have had issues with Achilles/ankle in the past. I know it is chronic. Yet, it has never woken me up in the middle of the night before.

Was something broken?

Well, outside of my mind? :)

After 4 hours in the ER - nope! Nothing broken. At least my heel or ankle. Achilles?

YES!

I have calcified tendinitis. Calcium is taking over my Achilles. HOLD the milk, and Ice Cream Bessy. Too much Brown Cow yogurt!?

Anyway, I was given a splint on my leg along with a less than handy pair of crutches. For the next 2-3 days I was supposed to keep the first one on, and use the latter. That lasted 2-3 hours. Off with the splint, and please no more crutches!!!

I was referred to a Ortho surgeon for a consult. Yet, will wait and see what my insurance says. I might have to see someone, just not the name given.

Anyone care to make a bet with me? I will be running the OC HM on May 1st.

Cheers!

No bets here! Not because I don't believe in you, but because I don't want to encourage any misguided running. :)

This is me, the Pot, telling you, the Kettle, to listen to your doctor. Why go there and ignore them, silly? Wear your splint at least, see the ortho, get some more info, and try not to let the runner-stubbornness that we all suffer from get in the way of your long term running.

Get well! I hope you don't have any more nights of waking up in pain.

Okay. If I see you at the start line on May 1 I'm hitting you. "Calcified Achilles Tendinitis" is also known as a "bone spur". It comes from *not* resting. In an attempt to deal with tendinitis, your body is now attempting to "toughen" the inflamed area by depositing calcium. If you are not careful here, you will be running down the road marked "achilles rupture". Then you *will* have to take some time off. A long time.

Time to see the doc and get a rehab plan together.

Sorry to be tough - but I have a couple friends and a coach who tried to run through what you have....
