Okay, I tried a Meg Runs motif thing writing in the Sand. Yet, even the writing itself got a little kicked. Plus, I am not sure if I did much kicking of the SD Rock and Roll HM or even sand at Carlsbad. Especially since this sign and Red Flag were flying.
Oh well, our kids still had fun with wave hopping, marine life and my calves and feet liked what the cool Pacific offered.

Oh yeah, we were there for a race though.
Well, I try to be positive. I am also trying to move on. I could go on and on with a negative Race Report, yet I want to keep things going.
Post race, after we finally got over the post race transportation problems - had some really good food at Casa de Guadalajara again. Our favorite Old Town eating spot. This helped ease the bad experience. Everything else between miles 5-13.1 and finally getting to our vehicle at Qualcomm Stadium will never be experienced again! Meaning this is the first and last San Diego Rock and Roll event.
That pretty much says it all. Oh, and due to the really awful running surface - harsh slanting Freeway on Highway 163 - and of course the killer hill while running on it. I think I have been knocked out of my first Full Marathon in 14 years for SF in July. My right knee IT Band is toast. Then near Mile 11 a nice pop and stabbing pain behind the same right knee. I finished though, limping across the line.
I have nothing more to add. Obviously no PR. Could've been. I was making good time at the Halfway point and even still before the "pop" at Mile 11. The transportation issues I hope get cleaned up for this event. Plus, the course. They might need to have separate dates for the HM and Full? Yet, really I don't care at this point. I am more concerned about being able to do SF end of July now. Plus, I love San Diego and will continue to make it home 3-4 long weekends a year. Yet, this was my first and last San Diego Rock and Roll. Maybe Carlsbad in January would be better? We love the beaches there and Legoland.
Oh, real quick! Great seeing Glenn Jones again. He is as nice in person as he seems through his Blog. Got to see him twice before and during the race. Glenn, we need to make these visits longer! Meg, as in Meg Runs - where were ya? Missed ya. Hope to meet you and BS some day soon.
Cheers!
PS - just read my last posting before we left town and all the nice comments. Thanks for all of them and reading the blog. Also, it is interesting how this event was anything but the smooth organization with transportation I thought it would be. I think my wife had a feeling. She was concerned even though other events, including Rock and Roll ones have always gone seamless smooth. I still highly endorse the other Rock and Roll events I have done - Phoenix especially. Very well run from Start to Finish. Also, Vegas, well organized as well for the most part compared to San Diego.

I totally agree with you, I did my last SD marathon a few years ago, I think I'm done. TONS of concrete.
BS and I were at mile 12(right before the water station) and then we ran to the finish! I stood at the finish for a couple of hours looking for you and Glenn, Alice, etc. and I recognized NO ONE. I still enjoyed it though. Ok, so get better and we'll meet in SF. Rest, ice, relax!
Sorry to hear about the horrible outing Slomo. Those folks should be embarrassed with the premium they charge. Hope you get that IT worked out - do you use a foam roller? Best therapeutic item I have ever bought and has all but eliminated my chronically tight IT Band on left leg.
BTW, no injury, Infection - see a couple posts back...
Bummer about the race... I think Rock and Roll tries it's best but I am wondering if they are getting too big for their britches? Rest and ice that leg up and do stretches (I know you know this) I have to stretch my IT every day. Keep your amazing attitude! BTW very cute kids!
I debated running SD RnR and had heard that about the slant of the roads. I'm glad it was sold out! The foam roller can work magic with a cranky IT band. I have to use mine every day. If you can get a sports massage with a runner LMP that can do a lot of good too. I figure every run good and bad can have a lesson in it. the trick is figuring out what you learned. :)
Slomo, I ran SD RnR 8 years ago and it was a nightmare afterwards with the shuttles. And that slant in the highway was never corrected, apparently. I'm sorry that the race didn't pan out as you hoped, but I still hope that SF is in the cards for you, so badly want to meet up with you while there. Hoping and praying your knee and IT bands issues behave and it was just a temporary thing. Congrats, Slomo, on finishing a tough race. Oh, and I love seeing your kiddos playing in the ocean. I so miss the ocean!!!
Sorry to hear about the bad experience at the race! Poorly run races are always a bummer! I hope the next one goes better, take care.
I'm sorry that your experience was a bad one, but I appreciate that you posted about it, anyway. It's encouraging to hear when other people struggle (whether because of a bad day or course issues or whatever) instead of NEVER hearing that and thinking you're the only one. So, thanks. Glad your family could at least enjoy themselves at the beach, and good luck healing up quickly!
My buddies went to SD with me when i did it and flatly refuse to go back since it was such a nightmare to spectate at. My buddies are die hard and serious troopers, so you know it has to be bad for them to say "You can't do that one again"
Sorry you had a rough run and your famil; was tortured, but great job gettin' 'er done!
Ouch! I hope there's nothng serious with your knee! When I saw you just past the 15k mark you were moving well and making good time.
Yes - the transportation was quite a snafu. I don't understand why the thing can't end back at Qualcom. Oh yeah. That would make sense...
Take care of yourself Slomo. I'll see you in San Francisco. Maybe dinner? At least a cup of coffee with your wife and family!
