Strange happenings in my home. Okay, training is not that odd. I am always running. The kids are always doing something athletic. Yet, for the last 4-5 days the only training on in our house is my wife!
Wow, she has been out three times this week following her couch to 5k program. Each time she has gone with two of the kids as well. Great! Can't tell you how excited I am for her. This a big thing in her life. Never has she ever thought anything running would be a goal of hers.
Me? You ask? It all goes back to the worst course run in my life. I have been trying to be kind in my complaints on the San Diego Rock and Roll Half Marathon. Mainly because I like SD. I generally like the Rock and Roll series as well. Yet, I still cannot get over how bad the course was (there is also the transit shuttle/trolley/Qualcomm Stadium idiocy; but I am trying to be nice).
It was not the hill on the 163 Freeway, but surface of it. Why do they keep using this route? Anyway, the hard concrete slanted at near 45 degree angles kept my ankles, Achilles and knees in constant off balance pounding. Today, my ankles and Achilles okay - my right knee and behind that same knee - NOT.
It is not hobbling me. Yet, at times, it really kills. The pain behind the knee I get while standing as well. There is also a popping or crunching feel to it. As I mentioned I first felt it about mile 11 during the race, and it caused my slowed gimpy, limpy jog to the finish.
I have sought advice from the usual suspects. All family/Friends with Med backgrounds. They all say I need to stop running for a bit. 1-2 weeks, maybe three. Then give it a push again. If it is still nagging - the official Doc visit. Although, both feel rest will cure what ails me. Yeah, that and the explosion and re-construction of Highway 163.
Anyway, I will try and follow the advice. You know how that is for me? ;( I have contacted the SF Marathon folks and changed my registration to the 1st Half Marathon. Bites! Yet, I am not ready for a Full and taking the time off needed for healing puts that even further away.
I have Long Beach in the Fall ready to go though. Which might be a better attempt for me right now. It is much flatter. Since it has been 14 years since a Full, I really need to take a step back - yeah - again!
Anyway, the first part of the SF full course will be a challenge and a scenic one. I look forward to it by itself. Golden Gate Bridge running will be the highlight. However, really that entire part of the course is. Here to a healthy leg by then?
In the mean time, I am really enjoying my wife's 5k training though. My big uplift right now. This is huge. I am so proud of her.
I am also nursing along my oldest who is tonsil and adenoidless now. He had the surgery two days ago. Frozen Fruit Bars/Ice Cream/Jello diet. Poor guy. He had one too many bouts of Strep in the last 6-8 months. It was time. He is slowly graduating to Mashed Potato's and Scrambled Eggs.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers!

Fantastic that your wife is getting into running! I preach C25K to every person I talk running with who says they could never run. Still working on my husband. Someday.....
Quick healing to you! That's so frustrating. Grrr.
Yay to your wife, that's excelent!! Sorry about the aches and pains, but so glad you'll still be in S.F. I still plan to run it, if I can get my act together and buy a ticket, but it's going to be very slow and very painful, still having some major heel problems. Can't wait to see ya!! :) Have a great weekend, Slomo!
I'm happy for your wife, it's exciting to have something to do that is active and involves your kids and your husband. When will she start her blog?? JK.
Sorry to hear about the pains but I'm sure some time off will help, you still have time before SF but doing the half seems like a good idea.
I've deleted two drafts of a RNR marathon post because they just seemed too negative and I didn't even run the race but some people really liked it so I guess my opinion doesn't count for much! Did you send them any comments about the race or the course? Might be a good idea!
Happy Weekend. Kids out of school?
Great that your wife is getting into it. Nothing ever wrong with the family being more fit!
Yes - that one stretch along the 163 is kind of tough. When I ran it at least the TNT "cheerleaders" were out there for some comic relief. Was it the same this year?
I'll see you in San Francisco. There's quite a group of blogger/twitter folks going!
Sorry to hear about the pains in and around your knee. I can ID with you on that. I wish you (and your son) a quick recovery. Good luck in SF.
