My blogging of late has been a little like the Vegas weather. Desert drought or pouring rain. I am on the latter weather pattern of late. Whoo hoo three posting days in a row.
This AM I had to address my Race Calender. Some of which was facing tough reality of life. Which caused me to make some hard decisions (well the hard ones were done for me).
First, NO Havasu Half Marathon now. I think I posted that one a few days ago. There is no way I can leave my own kids and the other kids I coach high and dry without a coach that day. I tried to find an adequate Assistant for both teams - zip! No race. I have been on my own coaching this season. Typically, I get one or two Mom or Dad's to help out, not this Season.
Second, this is the hard one. NO SEATTLE ROCK and ROLL! SOLD OUT! Man, how did I miss that one! It did sell out a year ago by late April. This year late March. Part of the issue is we have been a tad up in the air about life. Meaning where are we going to be living by late June. That issue has settled, and even more so in the last few days. Vegas is home till the end of this year at least. So, anyway, planning that Seattle trip was always a tad tough, till the last few days. Now, I found it is SOLD OUT! Oh well. Was not meant to be. I am sure it will rain as well :). Born and raised there for over 30 years. Last few weeks of June are always wet till after the 4th of July.
ST. GEORGE Marathon - officially registered this AM on the first day you could. NOW, will I actually get in? Luck be a lottery for me? Find out in May. I am not as excited for this one now, but if I get in - it will be a great weekend with Sisters family. She does it every year. If I don't get in, I have races in waiting.
Los Angeles Rock and Roll Half and Long Beach Full Marathon - are on the wait list. Depends on the above lottery luck of course.
Las Vegas Rock and Roll. Okay here is an interesting one. Competitor Group just may have decided this one for me. ONE HUNDRED FORTY-FIVE DOLLARS to run on the Strip! They have a flat $145.00 registration for both the Half and Full. That's one expensive finishers medal. Not sure it is worth it to me.
Did it last year, and thought it was an okay event. Yet, the only reason why I would do it again - well - it is here. I can crawl out of bed. Get to the starting line, then go home! I was thinking of doing the Full as well this year. The Full marathon course - trust me - I live here. It is not worth paying that money to do. Someone is going to need to do some convincing/ hyping me into paying that much for that race. I will save the money and do Phoenix Rock and Roll again the following month. Our family had a great time this past year there.
Fun thing out of all this - if we continue to live here or not after this year. I am finding out the must races of the year. Plus the better things to do that day with my money ones. Here is my list of must due events thus far:
1. Surf City. I will do this race every year no matter where my home is located. Hopefully, home will be closer to Huntington Beach.
2. Disneyland Half. Oops! I better get over to the website and register. This is a must, just for the family fun of doing. Plus, what portion of the race in the Park is good enough for me. Really well organized and fun support staff. Happiest Place on Earth - what do you expect?
3. Phoenix Rock and Roll. Kind of a surprise this one hits the list. The course is not very exciting. Yet, I really liked the event overall. Fun. Plus, nice time of year to visit Phoenix. We had a fun family weekend there.
4. San Diego Rock and Roll. Okay, I have yet to do this one. I will be doing the Half in June. First time for the Half at Rock and Roll SD. San Diego - our families favorite place to go each year (well, actually every 3-6 months).
5. Las Vegas Santa Run 5K. How could you not want to do this one! Free Santa Suit and beard, and each year they try to break the record of the most Santa's Running.
I will always try to do other ones. Yet, I think these are my 5 I plan for no matter the circumstances. For 2011 - yes never too far away - I am planning for Big Sur Marathon and maybe Disneyworld. Big Sur is my personal Boston. I have to try this course some day. Back to this year and reality though. I am looking at some Summer events now as well. Especially since Seattle just fell off the list. SF in July? Maybe?
Slice of Slomo Happiness -
1. My wife.
2. Soccer in the Park with the kids (my own) today. Easter/Spring Break Week for the Soccer League.
3. NO WIND in Vegas.
4. Elvis Costello, Kate Bush, Theloneus Monk and Black.
5. Anthony Bourdain
6. Coach K
7. Opening Day
8. Spring
9. Daffodils
10. Tulips
Cheers!

oh no! you don't think Vegas RnR is worth it? I was planning on doing the full this december. :( I thought it'd be a good destination to convince the boyf to come along w/and fun to vegas it up post race. :s
Hi Slomo,
I feel your pain buddy!! I have also attempted to register for a few races to find out that registration was closed or the race was filled!! What the heck!!! There is a race here in Maple Grove...both a half marathon and a 5k. My daughter and I were planning on doing the 5k together and I attempted to register about a week ago...sorry race is filled:( We were so bummed!! It sounds like you still have lots of options and you know the races that you want to run! I was also hoping to run the R&R half in Vegas. I guess I will have to see how everything pans out. Have a good one Slomo!!
145?!
Seattle RnR was expected to sell out and I'm not surprised to see it went a bit earlier this year. personally, I'm glad to see the kick that this has given the running community around here.
Just glad to see that you are back to running. :-)
Yeah, running a marathon in your own town does have it's advantages! You mention Big Sur - can't wait to run it in a few weeks!
I agree with you - $145 for a HM seems a little absurd. But itlooks like that is something tht RnR is doing. SD is the same way -same price for half as full. I beleive they are doing it because their fixed costs for putting on the event are the same whether half or full, and they *do* give you an option to switch from one distance to the other.
No OC on your list? That means I have to wait to meet you? Boo hoo! Of course right now my motivation is so low that I'm not sure when I'm running my next real race (HM or Marathon)...
