HM's Without Training

(Late posting on this one - Oops! Thought I had posted it Monday? More tomorrow)

1st - Big Happy Mothers Day shut out. Love the day. The women in my life seem to have made a huge impact on me. To this day, I would rather have a conversation about any thing with my favorite women. I am pretty sure I have the male point of view down - being the guy I am. My Mom, with my Dad passing away when I was 14, had a huge impact. Just being an example of determination each and every day was how she did it. Always, had some fun words of wisdom - but the example is what endures the most.

Yesterday, my wife had the fun event of sharing Mothers Day with our youngest Runner Dudes Birthday. Pretty fantastic day!

Running?

Okay, not gonna look to find out, but yes, it has been awhile. Not on the running, but the blogging. Just busy, and when overly committed - something has to give - right? Well, for me it has been this Blog. Well, actually, running some as well.

Soccer Season is over. Must admit - kinda glad. The season started very well. Then went South fast. The players kept trying their best, but after three back to back losses it was getting hard for me to find the coaching magic. They were games we should have won. Bad luck, yes. Yet, overall, the girls never gave up. Their coach never gave up. Yet, unfortunately a few of the Parents did. Made it difficult towards the end, yet our last game was a huge 6-2 win. Nice finish, and great way to set the table for Fall Season. Well, that's if I come back? The newer players all have younger Parents. I am noticing as I keep coaching, the younger the Parents are - the less patience. The less understanding of being a team. Makes it hard to teach and communicate what needs to be done. It requires more time and distractions with Parents. A few times too distracting and time consuming.

Well, given that Soccer was taking up more time than usual this season - Running also suffered. To the point, I ran the OC Half Marathon a weekend ago without training. In the three weeks leading up I ran a total of only 30 miles, with 5 days of zero miles. My longest run prior to the race - a 9 mile run three days before.

So, how was the race, you ask? Awful. Well, not totally. Although, I did run the race so slow I might as well stopped what I considered running, and walked it in. Yet, by the time I crossed the finish line I was feeling pretty strong. Strong in a - can-I-do-another 13.1 miles-please? Odd. Yet, it was very slow. My third time doing this event. Nothing changed over last years course, except the last 1/4 mile to the finish. It is an okay course, nothing too cool about it or scenic. It is a race that just seems to fall on the right date for us. Towards the end of Soccer Season and needing a break - a long weekend on the beaches of Orange County. It was just that as well. A very nice break and family getaway. We had fun.

Next, well scratch the Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon again this year. Instead, I will be doing San Diego Rock and Roll all over again - third time. I have registered for Seattle two years in a row. June is just a far too busy month for us. Last time registering for both SD and Seattle thinking I can do the travel in the same month.

So, SD RR HM first weekend of June. Yet, will I train for it? Maybe? At least a few hill repeat workouts, a couple of runs over 13 miles with some short and medium ones in between. My other issue - the Heat. We are much hotter sooner this year in Vegas. Triple digits today and tomorrow. It does limit things. Not just the running. Combine those Temps, with double digit mileage, and doing everything else life requires - it can be exhausting.

Sounds like you need some AC and a treadmill :)

I helped with coaching basketball when my son was younger. The parents were what made it the most difficult! Not fun!

Congrats on your 1/2 finish and good luck in SD! I hope you have fun!

Keep a good leash on those triple digits, as we don't want them creeping out this way :) Good luck on SD but maaaaaybe train a little this time!

I don't think I could run outside there in the summer--makes you a rock star. We have some of that weather, but not for as long as you.

My kids haven't ever done a team sport yet (they're only five), but I will keep in mind what you say about patience. I think I'd be patient anyway--I mean, they're kids, it's supposed to be fun. But I'll still try to bear it in mind.

Parents can be very over the top when it comes to their kids playing sports. It can be crazy.

I am not official training for the halves I am doing (one this weekend) but I am getting the long runs in.

Yup, I had monster parents while coaching my son's 3-4 YEAR OLD soccer team. Seriously?? SERIOUSLY?? That ended my coaching career.
Best of luck at SD. One of my local buds will be running her first full there - do me a favor and scream out 'Run, Mary, Run!!' ... I'm sure she'll hear you!

Meh, I always blog slack when I have no time, it's definitely the first thing to go.
My husband's nephews play hockey and it is ridiculous the way some of the parents react/act. It's just a freaking game people! Gee, I can't wait....blah.

Good luck at San Diego! I am not training for any of the races I have been doing lately, it's all about fun right now! Sometimes we just need that.
