They call it Nevada Day here today. A Holiday for the day Nevada became one of the most made up states in the Country.Trust me there is nothing here. Well, I shouldn't say nothing. There are some very scenic natural locales if you leave the Strip and are not afraid of searing heat in the Summer, diamondbacks, gilo monsters, scorpions and these little dudes -
Okay, they are cute. Yet the ones which are hardy enough to live here don't look as big cheeked as this guy. We also have lots and lots of wild rabbits or jack rabbits. I see them during most runs along with many unidentified in my mind, lizards. Nevada also has some interesting rock formations, but the better (and more noted) ones are in Utah and Arizona.
I guess my point? Why was Nevada ever a State in the first place? There was NO Strip or Las Vegas as we know it today back then. It is was just one Large vast spot of land/desert with nothing much happening except for mining. I am sure Lake Tahoe was pretty darn great even back then, yet still not much else in the rest of the State.
Oh well, the kids get a day off from school for it. Plus, our School District is always very creative in mixing Halloween and couple of extra Staff Development days into the Nevada Day festivities. So, it is more a less a Fall Break.
I am home with the entire Fam today. Having a blast as well. We played a neighborhood game of Street Football this AM. My oldest along with 5 of their friends. Now, in for the time being, playing Wee Wee (Wii) and DS I's. Electro Tech time gives me a break to blog, read a few emails, send a few of them, unclog the kiddos bathroom sink for the 50th time this year and read some running books. Can't Wait!
I also have a Running Expo to get to as well. Later today along with our LAST Halloween Party of the week. The former of which will keep me from attending the entire Party.
The HM tomorrow runs along the Turkey Trot route I did last year and then a long a section of the Lake Mead Park road. It should be a nice scenic break and it is right HERE! No travel, plus, get this - start time for the HM is 8:AM! Wow, I can sleep in as well. This sounds all nice and comfy, but it will be a hard course. Lots of hills. I will be taking this slow and easy. I feel the need in supporting local events as the reason for doing this and I have a break in Soccer games tomorrow as well.
The race will also put me over 100 miles for the month! Woo Hoo! It will be my last race till Vegas RR HM and Tucson Full early December as well. So, all November will be finishing my training (eating Thanksgiving) for Tucson essentially, and Vegas RR will be my last Run before that.
Good luck to anyone else running this week. I am sure there is plenty of Halloween Runs near you to do as well. Also, those getting ready to travel for the BIGGIE in NYC.
Especially Meg! You will kick it, plus have a great time in the Big City. Be safe back there! I am really excited for ya and to read how you do. Some day I will try that one.
Wow, if you have time, check out what Jamie Donaldson just pulled off at the Javalina Jundred last weekend. Super amazing.
Oh, BTW thanks for all the wonderful comments of late and support. Kristen, I wouldn't even worry about your Seattle HM! You sound ready for it right now!
BOO!

It's NEVADA day & I'm just NOW finding out?! Well at least there is a reason your kids are out of school. My kido is home but I'm pretty sure it's just so the teachers don't have to listen to kids talk about costumes & candy all day. ;)
Enjoy the half and awesome on the [over] 100 miles in October!!
And Jamie Donaldson - MY HERO. I must, MUST, MUST do that race next year. You're joining me right?! ;)
Good luck with your HM tomorrow Slomo! Enjoy a race with no travel involved. I also like the races that are close to home. I am running in a HM tomorrow too:)
BTW, I will find out if I am running Vegas early next week!
Happy Halloween! Boo back at you:)
Nevada was a state so that they could dump nuclear waste there and no one would be harmed cuz no one lived with a billion miles of dump site :). I was thinking about that as I was driving across the barren wasteland in New Mexico yesterday...put a nuclear waste dump here and no one would get harmed. May, it's really desolate along the northern route of I-25.
Anyway, good luck with the half tomorrow - will be cheering for you big time!!
Have fun at your race tomorrow!
I DO know what it's like to have too much time on your hands but it seems like with your kids, soccer, etc. you actually need this time. ENJOY it!
Thanks for the shout out. We live on Thursday morning. I'm busy getting sub plans done, etc. and then packing!!!!
We'll email and or text before then, need that support!! Thanks and HAPPY Halloween!
LOVED the Javalina report by Jamie. Did you see her on Facebook(Steve's FB)with the bee costume? She was just buzzing right along!
Yikes, my whole comment that I just posted was erased. BOO hoo!
Oh well, RACE well and HAPPY tomorrow!!!
Late with good race wishes but just so you know good vibes are on the way.
Nevada is a state so people can gamble their life savings away. Oh, wait, they can do that in CA also. Hmm... it must be Lake Tahoe then and nuclear waste.
Hope your race went well (I'm a little behind here...) and BTW, as an art teacher, I can say your kid's drawing is very good, he has some natural talent! Cheers!
Hope your race yesterday went well!
Actually - you know why Nevada was made a state? It was made a state just prior to the 1864 election (separated from Utah) to make sure that Lincoln had a majority in the electoral college. The Comstock Lode helped funded a good portion of the Civil War. Hence your State's motto - "Battle Born".
And by the way - there are some beautiful parts of your state. Ever driven along the Eastern border from Wells to Ely? As beautiful as the Eastern Sierra Nevada in California!
Thanks for the shout-out and encouragement, Slomo! As always, reading your blog has been a bright point in my day. Thanks for continuing with the wonderful posts :)
