No Glenn. I don't need your pet/friend visiting me :). Although, that was a memorable posting about the animal we know as a Taper. I am more curious what all of us as Runners (okay, I barely classify as one, I know) call this Taper time before a race/event. Plus, why do we name it after this shy wallowing in the bushes and mud animal (correct me RBR if I am wrong about the lifestyle of a Taper). I know, it is Taper because we are to be tapering off on our typical training - hence the name. My UW education is not wasted - trust me.
Anyway, why? or was it what? Maybe both? What do you do for this time before a race/event. Most dislike this time. Most it seems eat the entire contents of their Fridge as well. Some just roll over and wallow in the bushes and mud. What do you do?
I am supposed to be Tapering. Instead of wallowing around with the bushes, mud or my fridge - I will be running. Last night marked the typical cut off before a Half for me. Race is Sunday, I like giving myself three whole days to rest my legs. I love that fresh leg feeling at the Start of each of these. Yet, this week has not gone as planned. Plus, I feel more in SF training mode than SD HM PR mode.
So, anyway, last night I got in 7 nice miles. A little slower than I wanted. Probably still lingering effects from the Saturday Planet of The Apes Desert Mt. Trail Run. You know maybe I should become a Race Director and start a Trail Run on this trail with that name. Okay - nobody steal that one please!
Anyway, the ankles, Achilles and calves all good last night. Did have a slight dull pain on my right knee or just above it. Again, I think something for my Quads from the downhill portion of Saturdays run. Tonight! NO rest - No Taper - just yet. I feel a need for another run to keep the mileage for the week up. Have not decided if it will 5 easy miles or a few miles longer again. Then - I rest. Two days off, Friday and Saturday going into SD. Although, Saturday might be spent walking around either the SD Zoo or Seaworld chasing my 5 year old - 10 year old around. Which can be as much a workout as an HM.
Post race - Monday and Tues. off. Wednesday early AM (yes, back to VFRT - Vegas Furnace Running Time) for 15 miles. Thursday off. Friday easy 5. Saturday - Planet of the Apes.
Okay, my wife called yesterday with a question from a co-worker of her's. What is Slomo doing for Winter Races? It got me thinking of not just Winter but 2011 as well. Crazy? Yet, it all started with my earliest ever registration for a race - Surf City HM. Have I told you how much I enjoyed that race? :) It is a yearly must for me now. Plus, since I knew I was doing it no matter, I signed up during the discounted early returning runner period. Thanks Surf City!
Anyway, I have a tentative 2011 schedule up on the right margin. Emphasis on tentative! Notice NO Vegas Rock and Roll! I am boycotting it. $145.00 to run a HM down the Vegas Strip - no. Not for me again. At least the first time it was only 90.00 (only ?). Long Beach Full will be my last of 2010, except for a fun little 5K called the Santa Run here in Vegas.
I am looking for feedback. If any of ya have run a race on the list - let me know what you thought of it. Or, if you heard anything good or bad as well. So, feedback posting - curious what you call Taper (I know what you call it Glenn :), thanks) and on my tentative 2011 race to do list. Yes, much shorter list than 2010. On purpose. Only planning 5 events for 2011. My family is telling me to find other hobbies :). Also, no Rock and Roll races. I still might add one though - Dallas HM or Seattle. Depends if we visit family in Fort Worth in March or Seattle Family in June, 2011. Again, nothing in concrete here at all - too much can happen (injuries). Plus, if the 5K rage takes over my wife - I will be adding a few of those here and there as well.
Have a great Day!
Cheers!
OH, A HUGE PS - Good Luck and thanks Ken Griffey, Jr. (The Kid). I will forever miss the most beautiful swing in baseball history. The BEST baseball player I have ever seen play. He made Baseball a passion in Seattle. I will miss him as much I miss the entire Seattle Supersonics basketball franchise. I bought the only baseball uniform I have ever purchased today in honor of him. A nice looking grey road uniform with SEATTLE across the front, Griffey's number 24 on the back. He retired yesterday. The same day the Mariners drafted him 23 years ago. To steal a past Mariner team slogan - You Gotta Love That Guy!

Stopping by your blog via RBR...
I'm thinking it's tapir, but I don't care enough to actually check that fact. :)
I'm not much of a runner, only since March, but I look at tapering like I do rest days. "Not being allowed" to run makes me want to run. And when I DO run, I mostly hate running, so it's nice to have some time where I'm wishing I could be running. :)
Good luck with all your upcoming races!
Yes, I was actually going to wear all my NIKE gear and pose as Kara G., run through the expo all day and look for you and your family!! I already knew you'd be posing as the high school wrestler...I've see pictures. For now, I think we'll hit the expo early on Saturday and I'll look for you and others...in Boston I recognized about ten people right off the bat so...don't be suprised if slightly heavier, louder, not quite as cute and DEFINITELY older version of Kara comes bounding up to you. It may or may not be me!
Have a safe trip and enjoy SD!!
Thanks Kate. Yes, I know the spelling is with an "i". I was hoping RBR would be all over me on that. Instead, thanks for doing it for her! ;)
Welcome to the blog! Keep kickin! As far as running and enjoying it. I used to have a love/hate thing for it a decade ago or more. Now, love/like/can't I do this tomorrow instead thing. I think the appreciation comes with age and the loss of brain cells with aging. Something I have obviously going on as the hours pass. :)
Come back again!
$145 to run a half marathon, no matter where, is ridiculous!!! I'm sorry but these races are getting out of control! Glad the A's (ankle and Achilles) are behaving, and when you are race director with your own Plant of the Apes trail run, I'm going to be there for the very first one!! Good luck on Sunday, Slomo!!!!
It's amazing how expensive some races are. I did the R&R in NOLA, but got in for $50 as I was one of the first 50 registrants, but it was also my first ever full marathon. I am more and more liking the local smaller races with less bells and whistles. I have always wanted to do the St George, UT race, it is absolutely on my list. Have fun with your "taper"!
What a bummer Griffey retied. At one point I thought for sure he was destined to be one of the top two or three home run hitters. He was such a spectacular hitter. Then he got hurt. And hurt again. And hurt again. Too bad. In his prime he was a great player!
Love the ballet dress! We do that here, too! Hope your son is feeling better soon!
