Running Against Wisdom

Just a quick check in. I ran today - well kinda. Yes, I know my Doc visit was all about more rest/days off, Advil and ice. Yet, today, I woke up feeling really strong in both legs. Maybe fresh and pain free is closer to the feeling. Plus, after 3 days of taking care of my wife, caged mending kitten, and my kids - I really needed to get out.

My wife was feeling better, a tad better today. She is still dealing with some pretty intense pain. Her scalp got fairly itchy again towards the afternoon. Yet, in the AM she felt better. She actually told me to go for a walk. "I know you can't run - so walk! " I took her up on it. Except I actually did run.

The stretch was light and easy. No pain or discomfort. So, I took off at a light jogging pace. Gradually getting a tad faster after a mile. It was a 5K in all. When I left the house it was 96 degrees. So, it was a good time for a light 5K, not just due to the leg. I did have one twinge - very slight around mile 2. Then after that nothing. It was a very smooth, slow workout. Yet, still it was a run.

I will rest it tomorrow and try the same distance, but  faster on Saturday. Nothing felt tight post run. I gave my knee, Hamstring and calf 20 minutes of ice post run as well. Tonight, everything feels pretty fluid walking around. So, Saturday, I will give it another go. Except for the 5 miler after a week off, it has been 17 days off of total rest. I know the recommendation was for at least another week of rest. However, I feel like I might be out of the woods of this Post SD RR injury - finally- hopefully.

My wife? She has a follow up Monday. They will let her know if she is fit for work as well then. I have read there is a vaccine for this - I will be getting mine soon. Very painful. It seems to be slowly, ever so slightly getting better for her. We have been reading sometimes the pain may linger for a month and up to a year in some cases. Lets hope NOT! She says the pain is worse than childbirth contractions. It comes in waves and zaps her like a really strong electrical shock on the left side of her head.

Kitten is doing really well. She is actually using the leg today. Really hard to keep her in that kennel. She hates it. We hate hearing her hate as well. Stitches come out this weekend, or early next week. After another week of kennel she can get out and walk around some for 3-5 days. Then she should be able to be out of the kennel most of the time.

Oh, running in the heat today - felt great!

Oh well, hear is to good luck I have finally licked this one, and can slowly build my miles back up before SF in July. Which might be iffy now. We are still planning on going, but mid July will let us know for sure. More important to us is my wife's health at this point.

Oh, my Facebook Wall had a posting by the Long Beach Marathon today. They had a course/elevation comparison with Boston. Flat!! I guess I picked a good first full in 14 years to run. Plus, if you need a BQ race - this has to be the one!

Thanks for all your very kind comments and concern. Runners are the best!!!

Dang, so sorry to hear about your wife's shingles. My brother had that a few years ago, very uncomfortable stuff. I hope she is feeling better soon.

As for you, take it easy there Slomo! Don't want you injured again, but I'm glad that you enjoyed your 5K.

Also glad to hear that tonsil boy and bad hip kitty are on the mend!
Have a great weekend!

Glad to hear your wife is getting better. I have heard that shingles is painful. Seems so unfair that a childhood disease (chickenpox) can do such damage!

Nice to hear that you're getting back to running. Take it easy as you re-build. Yes - Long Beach is flat. There is one hill - back around mile 18-19. That's the only thing that made it tough - where it was on the course. And the downhill finish is to die for! Check it out

Slomo you are quite the caretaker - hope Mrs Slomo is feeling better as those shingles can be nasty, especially with the heat! Be cautious with your comeback - don't want to overdo it! Have a great week.
