As I have mentioned previous - if someone will pay me - I have found the prefect career. Easily a way of life or living I should have pursued while in College. Yet, it has to be Elementary aged kids. Yeah, not many jobs for that. Sadly, as the kids get older that is when the volunteer Mom's and Dad's give up and the paid Junior/Senior High and College ones take over. Yet, just as Kindergarten, I have been told is the most important grade (Hi Meg!) in education in many ways. I really think some of the best athletic training for most team sports begins with Elementary school aged kids.
Soccer season came to an end yesterday. A little too soon for me. My girls team played their all! Yet, given they were playing an age up in the Tourney - size, speed and experience ruled against us. No goals at all the entire Tourney. Yet, they played really well given the odds against them. They played one of the teams right down to the wire. Only getting beat 2-0 in the end. Experience is the reason we did it. Or, I wanted them to do it. I wanted them to know what it will take to succeed at the next level. Plus, for me to see the same as their coach. Great group of girls and fun season. I am already missing the fact we will have no practices until late August.
Running and training for my first Full Marathon in 14 years begins now though. So, I have something to fill the void. It was hard to get a long run in over this past weekend with the Tourney covering Fri-Sunday. Yet, I did get in a run Saturday night. Medium to easy pace for 5.5 miles.
Tonight - well actually late afternoon - long run. At least 13 miles. I am feeling a little push by the Calendar though. So, it might be more in the 15-16 miles range. Will see what my body can do after a long weekend. I want to get in the longest distance possible tonight before the San Diego RR a week from this Sunday. I do not want to do anything over my usual 10-11 mile run one week before a HM.
I have had really good success with a 10 miler 5-7 days before an HM. Than a nice easy 4-5 miler 3 three days before the race. A good routine I do not want to mess with. Along with taking 2-3 days off post race. After this I should have plenty of time beating my body up over 16-18 mile runs and then a few weeks of 20 milers or more. I have already told my wife and kids life will may get grumpy, sore and tired from June 10th - July 20th.
One thing we have not had - heat! Where is it? Vegas has been cold of late. Yesterday, for our last Soccer game - 60-63 degrees and of course 30 mph winds. We even have more snow on Mt. Charleston a 12,000 ft or so Peak just NW of town. No complaints, but very odd for us.
Anyway, hope everyone had a great weekend! Keep kicking!
Cheers!

Most people I know who coach their kid's team (my brother included) are very relieved and happy to see the season over. It's refreshing to hear that you love it so much and recognize the need for kids sports! Bravo. Good luck with your long runs! Cheers!
Dust off those NB's and get crankin' Slomo. Are you going to break out a new pair for the marathon? Thanks again for nurturing those young players!
I totally agree, elementary aged kids need some good mentors and coaches since this is where they develop their attitudes towards sports. Not just anyone can do what you do, a male who does encourage and nurture while giving kids a chance to have fun and experience the sport for all it's worth. So sad you'll be missing it but it sounds like your running will take up some of that time and energy!
Coolest dad and coach ever. I loved this post!
I am UBER excited for you about SF. You will have fun I just know it!
The heat has moved to minnesota. It is so darn hot here, we can barely stand it!
Oooo how exciting! Training for your first full after so many years; that's awesome Slomo! I will totally share Jill with you. :)
We haven't had the heat here and I don't want it!!
I really miss youth sports! I coached soccer, little league, and was a cubmaster for a long time when my kids were young. The best thing about youth sports was that it really didn't matter whether you won or lost (to the kids) as long as the snacks and the pizza was good!
See you in San Diego!
