Wow, Could it Really " Be" Getting Better?

Okay, I have had false illusions and probably not the best advice on my ankle/foot injury in the past. However, it is getting better. This is something I can quantify in a very simple way. I am limping and hobbling around less. Especially, just after waking in the AM, walking downstairs and after sitting for long stretches. Also, the sidelines coaching on Saturday - not too bad on the ankles. The discomfort is still there (I don't want to call it pain anymore, but I got call it something?). It still keeps me from a full range of motion, but not as bad post 5 miler last Monday.

Which gets me back to following advice. I really think I set myself back by following advice of others. It was professional coming from someone with an MD. Plus, I have no doubt it was good, sound blanket generalizing advice based on the examination, and nothing of interest on the X-ray. Yet, I still feel strongly and even more so - we as the actual Runner - know our bodies, and should never forget that. NO! In no way am I saying supersede an MD with your own lay person thinking. Yet, I do think, you should know your own pain and take it into account. You also know the running routes, schedule and mileage - pain free and not going into an injury.

In other words - I was premature in taking on a 5 mile run last Monday. Run was pain free, yes. Yet, even as I approached mile 3, I said if you go further, you know you are going to have pain tomorrow. Well, silly me for NOT listening. Truth of the matter, maybe any miles on the injury was probably not wise last week - so, who knows?

Anyway, I feel my ankle is about where it was going into last Monday's 5 miler. As I learned though, running on it now - not the best thing. I want to go through some toe lifts or toe push ups as I call them without pain first. So, when will that be? Have no clue. Never been down this road before with this one. Don't even know if toe push ups without pain is a good marker or indicator. I just know I still have pain with this stretch/exercise. So, why push it? As many an NBA, NFL or MLB player has been listed before me - I am DTD (Day to Day). The important thing - it is getting better.

Thanks for all the advice though. Puddle Thumper and RocksandRoots had some good stuff for me that I used. As well as Happy Trails. Serious Case of the Runs recent posting was interesting with regards to my current injury as well as future ones. Crash (Paige) has a well written Blog. If you have not checked it out, give it a read. Also, Runner Girl Hits the Trails - I wish I could find the great Ortho Doc you found in Orange County here in Las Vegas!

Soccer, went well this past weekend. The teams I coached had some success and fun. So, did their coach. My oldest two boys - mixed effort. The younger of the two a very good game considering he took a year off from playing. The oldest? Well, he seems to be taking a step or two back. Truth is though he was sick all last week. I am sure that had a big impact. He has many more games to play. Most importantly he still loves to play the sport. I think Soccer and Basketball are the best sports for the ages of my kids. None of them have taken any interest in Baseball yet. The oldest two would like to play Football, but their Dad will not let them play till Junior High. So, Soccer and Basketball it is for another year at least. I hope?

Been interesting reading the Blogs of late. It does seem some are feeling the aches and pain of late though. Good luck in all you are doing. Hope the injury bug never finds ya as you prepare for LA, Boston, Colorado, Green Bay, Nebraska and Eugene Marathons. Fun reading your posts. Seems this 6.66 virtual was a pretty viral event for most of ya. Interesting how something like this starts and spreads - in a good way. Julie (Minnesota Mileage), inspired me over the weekend meeting up with a good running group. I need to find some here in Vegas. There are a few, but not many. I did one once. A local running store puts it on - the turnout was pretty light. Myself and three others. Maybe I need to start my own?

Oh well, have a great day and upcoming week! Cheers!

Err to your foot, that's what I say to it, err!! I know there are people that hate the coined term, "Listen to your body" but I do think it applies because only YOU know exactly what the pain is, despite us all reading it. I would suggest that if it't not happy here "soon" you may want to seek out some sort of medical advice, preferably a poditrist(??). Wishing you ONLY the speediest of recoveries!!

I hope you're still icing your ankle between runs or even if you aren't running...it's helped us heal up quicker! It's good for the feet too!
It sounds like coaching is going well, I think you'll definitely have baseball and football in your future(well, your kids' future) and that's pretty exciting!
Have a nice week and I hope your ankle continues to get better!
