Still Here

Friend who follows the blog emailed wanting to know If I am still alive. He missed my last post, but I guess it has been a few days since that one.

Sorry, I don't think about writing every day. I usually only post if there is something worth posting. Not sure there is much too interesting in my daily life for daily posts. Especially when it comes to running. I write these post mainly as journal of sorts only. Just something to gauge my thoughts and feelings with regards to running and training. I have a separate log for the actual numbers - miles, pace, times, calories, VO2 and all that uninteresting stuff.

I also have not run since Saturday night! Odd yes, but my body was telling me it needed a few days off. Once a month this happens. I have found being obedient to the happy aches and pain barking at me, has really helped me. I was going to run last night, but as I was stretching noticed my lower legs were still feeling tight and sore. I ended up doing a self massage on them, and this AM they feel perfect and ready to go.

Here is another reason as well. For the last few days I have felt not myself. Tired and little achey over all. Also, slightly grumpy. It dawned on me last night what was up. No, not sick. Withdrawls.

Caffeine Withdrawal. I have a Diet Dr. Pepper twice sometimes three times a day. I forgot to buy more my last grocery trip and so did my wife. I ran out sometime on Sunday. Never thought there was that much caffeine in them to make a difference one way or the other. Guess, I am wrong. Also, odd that my body is so in need of a caffeine fix. I typically only drink water outside of the house and leave my caffeine fix for the house. Well, now that I know all this about my body now - I am thinking of not buying anymore. Or, switching to caffeine free. Just bugs me some my body became dependant on it even in such small amounts.

So, a run tonight and my first Soccer practice for the season. Both should be fun. My little guy is all excited for his first practice. Hopefully it doesn't rain. I seem to mention rain a lot of late. Well, very unVegas like we have had rain showers or all day of it once a week for most of February. My run will be only in the 6-7 mile range.

Email today put a wrinkle into my Fall Marathon plans. Long Beach Marathon was going to be my fall back race if lottery luck is not so lucky for St. George. I figured If I don't get into St. George again - Long Beach. Yet, now it seems Long Beach is putting an entrants cap in place this year. Only 6,000 Marathon runners and 11,000 Halfers. I am thinking Long Beach might fill up quickly now the word is out. I should hear in May on St. George.

Slice of Slomo Happiness:
1. All my wife does. Yesterday after a long realworld, Ballet for our little girl and she picked up Soccer supplies for the kids and Dad.
2. Kids doing everything they are asked to do with chores around the house. Then, all the fun around the house as well.
3. New running shoes.
4. Watching American Idol with my wife. Well, actually she watches and I fall asleep. Better than a Tylenol PM.
5. Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach, David Sylvian, Robyn Hitchcock, The Posies, Alison Krauss, Steve Martin playing the Banjo.
6. Jack London
7. Stephanie Abrams
8. Charlie Rose
9. Dannon Yogurt
10. Actually seeing people line up outside an IHOP for free pancakes. Why? I know they're free, but can't you make better ones at home from a box/bag of Krustez?

Cheers!

Hi Slomo! I remember when I gave up caffeine cold turkey when I was pregnant with Madison. I had horrible headaches for about a month; it was miserable! It really is amazing how addicted our bodies become to something.

I'm glad that you are resting and taking it easy. I've been trying to listen to my body more too. Recover well my friend!

I was a D Coke drinker in college but I try not to drink soda at all anymore...I do like my Starbuck's though. I cannot stand caffeine withdrawls, I get a headche and I feel so tired. I know you'll get through it, good luck!
I think you should do Long Beach if you can, you'd love the view and it's a nice course! Of course, I hear St. George is beautiful. Have a nice rest of the week.

Rest well Slomo. Have heard that the caffeine in sodas can be worse than coffee/tea but not sure to test that. Noticed your thing for Dannon - have you tried Brown Cow yogurt? Very good and very natural.

Have a great week - and your info is never uninteresting!!!

Hi again. The race is the Noble Canyon 50k. I did it last year and had fun.

Hi Slomo,
Oh boy, I have given up caffeine/soda so many times! The hardest is when you do it cold turkey!! I felt the same way...achey, terrible headaches and I was super crabby:) It took me at least two weeks to get back to normal. It was not my idea of fun. I try really hard to stay away from caffein by drinking decaf coffee but I occasionally have a soda.

I hope that you and your Slomo clan have a wonderful weekend:)

No need to apologize! It's tough to come up with something to write about on a daily basis. There's this thing called "life" that gets in the way sometimes...

I don't think I'll even *try* to shake my caffeine habit. It's the last vice I have left! As Adam and the Ants said so eloquently: "Don't drink don't smoke - what do you do?"

Have a great weekend!
