First with whats new. New Title (ever changing I know?) and pix. Plus, the Top Ten Happy things I was tagged with had me thinking. One, WHO can come up with only TEN? Or, is it WHOM? Anyway, with "my ever changing moods" (thanks Style Council) I have decided to post a Top Ten Momentary Happy List with the beginning of each post. I know some do a grateful list (thanks Tara). Since, they have that covered I will go with momentary snapshots into what is making Slomohusky, President and CRO (Chief Running Operator) of the Running Miles Bank of Slomo happy.
1. Smiley Happy Faces of my 4 year old and 6 year old at the Disney on Ice Show yesterday.
2. My wife and her consistency.
3. My oldest two boys trying to out BOY each other.
4. Sunshine.
5. Elvis Costello, The Style Council, The Jam, The Clash, Kate Bush, David Sylvian, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett
7. Emma Thompson
8. Room Service.
10. Conan O'Brien
Running. Put in some rainy, sleety (is this a word?), windy chilly miles Friday night. 5 Miles of it all. It was actually kinda refreshing. In the desert that is Vegas, we will take what we can get. Even if it dumps on me during a run. Last week was a recovery from Phoenix Rock and Roll HM for the most part. Took three days off, then hit the dreadmill for 3.5 miles.
Why dreadmill? Rain, plus I needed to find out if I have a team to coach this upcoming Spring soccer season. Administrator of the League I coach and kids play, works out like clockwork every MWF at the same time each of those nights, at the same facility. It gave us a chance to chat. So, 13.1 racing last Sunday, 3.5 dreadmill Thursday, and 5 miles Friday night. Low mileage week, but on purpose.
Oh, and coaching soccer? Three of my own kids will be playing soccer this Spring, the other wants to try Baseball. I may not be coaching my daughter this time around. She is very sad about that. Not many from the previous season are returning for the same team, and they have a shortage of girls playing in this age group overall. I will be coaching my youngest, 4-5 year old boys team. My oldest boys coach is not coming back, so, who knows I might need to coach there as well, or at least Assist. Baseball, I have never coached and don't think I will start this season. I am sure my second oldest will have a good one regardless.
By the way, have not been coaching the oldest two boys in Basketball this past season (currently going on). Mistake. I will be coaching Basketball again this Summer. Love that sport too much to just sit watching. Although, yesterday AM practice I helped out a lot for a parent who is not supposed to be coaching.
Oh, fun thing with the kids? My wife decided to sign the oldest three up for the kids one mile fun run at the Surf City Full and Half Marathon in February. This will be a blast for them while I am doing the Half and their Aunt, two cousins are doing the Full Marathon. They are super excited. Nice touch Surf City. They all get T's, goodie bag and a Medal for doing it. How fun is that!! Looking forward to this event.
Not only is my Sister and Nephews running the Full, my wife has two co-worker friends who will be traveling with us doing the Half. It will make for one happy Pasta and Beach Parties the day before. Do to all this, I am must admit, I am not going to push myself at this one. This will be a a laid back race for me. NO push for a PR even though it is flat course. Just heading to the Beach with family and friends for a fun weekend and run. Hope it doesn't rain?!
This week will be a high mileage one though. I will get in two longish runs, two easy, and one tempo. Yet, I might swap one of the longish ones with a trail run up my favorite desert Mt. I need to get in some hill runs and I am needing some trail time. Need a break from the roads and streets of my usual routes and the solitude of the trails above Vegas. I also may double up an easy day run with a swim.
Changing my running Sabbath as Glenn likes to call it this week. I will run tonight (my usual day off, I took yesterday off), putting in one of the long runs for the week. Not sure on the mileage, but will shoot for something over 9 miles and see how I feel after that. It will be a Camelbak run, so I will try out just water and for now Hammer Endurolyte Capsules. Have not ordered the S Caps yet. Thought I would give the Hammer product another shot first. I really like there Gels. Anyway, as you have noticed - experimenting with things this week, and being flexible. Yet, the mileage should be near 35-40 for the week. Lets hope anyway.
Shout out to Meg. Can't wait to read a race posting on yours and BS efforts at Carlsbad. All my best as well. Big one to Minnesota Julie on completing her first HM. You should be feeling really proud of your effort -especially in the cold and rain. Really good time and effort. Tricia, really sorry about the foot. At least you caught it before it got worse. ALL the Colorado runners (especially Super Hero herself, Jamie Donaldson) - great hearing from ya this week. I am just thinking with all of ya running out there - Colorado must be one big Runners Commune or Nirvana. If you ever stop by Happy Trails Blog you can see why with all their great Photo's of the trails. Must be something in the Air there - or lack of it? Have fun in Seattle this week, Utah and California as well. Where ever else you maybe, have a great mileage week and keep kickin!
Cheers!

Hi Slomo,
Oh my God you are one busy daddy! Wow you kids are in so many different sporting activities and how great that you will be coaching! I am sure that your kids probably love having you there with them. Good job on getting your miles in even if it is on the mill it is better than nothing. Take care! Oh, and I liked your list:)
Like the new title and the pics! I always wanted to try a Camelback, I have an older one (from hiking)that I might try out before ordering a new one just for running. Good luck (and have fun)with your busy running week!
I like the desert rat idea. Nice header pic, too! That is very cool that the kiddos will participate in the festivities at Surf City - nice call on that. Have a great week and enjoy the rain.
I like your musical selections!
Stay away from Little League unless you are ready for *every* dad in your league to tell you what you are doing wrong. That's the problem with youth baseball - every dad knows everything about baseball. Mind you - they never playe, but they still know everything.
I ghope the weather is looking up for your - it was gorgeous this past weekend here....
So, I like your title but I have such a thing about "rats." I know the term "desert rat" is different from the rats I have grown to despise BUT hmmm...how about Desert Runner? Please explain...
Sounds like you are all going to have fun in Huntington Beach, a family reunion!
Hi Meg,
One of those things if you have to explain the meaning to deeply , the point is lost. Like other semi hip, underground lingo movements - i.e Rat City Roller Girls, Rat Pack or Desert Rats.
Still, I think BS needs to have that ankle seen by a Doc. Great that you two did so well and ran it. Yet, I think BS may have really damaged something there. Just concerned.
oh how fun that the kiddos are signed up to run too! that'll make the day that much more special. :)
