Dirt and Asphalt

Momentary Slice of Happiness List: (edited from the previous list, #9 was my two new pairs of NB 1062's for only 47.99 each arriving over the weekend; I have no idea why it was left off the previous list? Braincloud maybe?)

1. My wife. Today she battles Red Tape to make things happen for improved patient care.
2. My little girl excited for her 3rd Ballet class today. Learning my second oldest just starting piano lessons can sight read any music put in front of him. The smart, willing, ready to always serve heart of my oldest. My fun four year old crawling under his Mom/Dad bedding covers each morning to wake me up.
3. Prefab Sprout, Swing Out Sister, Everything But the Girl, Big Audio Dynamite, New Order, Puccini, Dave Brubeck and Hugh Masekela.
4. Walt Whitman
5. David Mamet
6. Four Bean Veggie Chili Dinner Night.
7. Ken Burns
8. Education
9. Desert
10. Seattle getting a Hard Rock Cafe (Finally!) and a really big Kurt Cobain Fender guitar to go with it.

Thanks Seattle PI

Yesterday was a fun test. Oh, first, Sunday Evening run did not happen. I think someone was telling me to keep my run training Sabbath. Friends not seen or chatted with in many months stopped by. Then one of my running Nephews, his fabulous wife and fun little girl. All poppins. Love them. So, I was well rested going into yesterday after two days off.

Had time away from the Realworld yesterday AM. Took that few hours and put it to use on the trails. Really was missing the dirt and solitude of being up high looking over it all. So, I ran up the Desert Mt. trail (where the recent title picture was taken this past Fall) above us for a 6 mile loop of mostly hills and some fun quad busting downhills.

The trail was in great shape and very soft. Typically, the ground is like running on concrete. Yet, with all the rain we had last week (and snow up there) felt like my favorite dirt in the Cascades of Washington. Most of the trail became a Wash or downhill stream from the rain. There is still some snow as well, but didn't run that high or at least have the time too. Still, 3 miles of nearly vertical running put a nice burn on the Hams, calves and Achilles. Nice feeling. Then I stopped for a 5-10 minute pause of reflecting on the entire Vegas Valley below, the Snow capped Mt. Charleston to the W, NW; and Red Rocks. Pretty fantastic view. Especially, when I'm so used to The Planet of Apes (beginning of the Original flick) look of the Vegas area Mts and Hills. Then back down for another 3 miles. Really a nice run and as a runner I admire said recently about a race she ran - "can I do it twice!"

Well, as the day progressed that urge to do more couldn't be held back. So, at about 8:30 last night I laced up the NB road shoes for another run. This time my well run, many times over flat 5 miler for a tempo run. Not the fastest I have been doing this one of late, but felt great anyway. Nice night time run. Especially for legs which gave it all kicking some dirt up and down a Mt. earlier.

So, two a days! I liked it. Had the energy and kick in the legs to do it - so why not? Today, day off and time for a swim and whirlpool treatment at my local gym. Tomorrow - 12-13 miler if it doesn't rain. It is in the forecast for Wednesday. Not much in the way of rain gear being a Desert Rat Runner (see the comment left on the last blog if you really need a reason for the latest title Meg). If it was race event I would run it. Trainer, knowing the next day will be "sunshine and lollipops" (thanks Swing Out Sister) .....

Have a great day. Oh, and can anyone explain this fashion statement to me?

Cheers!

Hi Slomo,
Love you list! I also have a thing for Walt Whitman...have you seen the movie With Honors? Seeing that movie kind of made me appreciate him more...long story. It sounds like you got a nice run in! I love the new pictures of your kids...adorable:) Keep smiling Slomo!

Big hats are in.

I am not sure about New Order and Walt Whitman being on any list together - could cause planetary alignment/destruction issues!!! I hear ya on the shoes - found a pair of no longer made Brooks Cascadia 2's at a shoe shop in Philly - on their way to me now! Love good shoes that make the feet happy, right? Have a great week - hope your rain does not interfere too much!

Happy Trails - Thanks for the comments. NB 1062 is my shoe.
Differing worlds/planets? I guess it might sound strange? Yet, New Order has really great stuff, especially when they were Joy Division. Walt Whitman unique character and great American Poet. Both equally appreciated in something that brings joy to my whole world/being.

Always think of ya folks when I run a trail. Thanks for reading and leaving your comments. ALWAYS appreciated.

Thanks Julie! I saw With Honors years ago when it first came out. I remember liking it. Always smiling thanks! How is the weather in Minnesota?

Don't have much to say about that hat except...I hope that it doesn't become a fashion statement. YUCK!

I love your list. Good luck to your wife. You'll have to tell us what she's doing! I wish my daughter had taken ballet. I love seeing little girls twirl around in their tutus. I had such fun with it when I was young. Be sure and post pics of her recitals!

You made the trail come alive to me with your descrptions. I can't wait until spring and I can go trail running up in the foot hills again. I'm not as hardcore as HappyTrails with running in the snow up there!

BTW-I did not find the crazy ladies link on your blog. It was some random blog that I had never heard of, but apparently he lives in the same town that she does. No worries Slomo!

It rained here in OC today - moderately. he forecast was for light rain, so I went out for a run (not my normal self - I knw), and about 30 minutes in it started pouring! I was like a wet shaggy dog! At least it was warm. Hope it holds off for you tomorrow!
