At least for an addicted runner?
Two weeks of life lessons in being flexible. Sick kiddios and myself. Although, what they say about this H1N1 thing is true. The youngest are hit hardest. Our youngest (4.5) seemed to have it a little worse than our 6 year old. Contrast even more noticeable with me. My wife did not get this one. Her realworld requires the Shot, or vaccination for H1N1. I did not have that luxury on this shot, unlike the Seasonal.
Still what I had of it was nothing like what the youngest in our Family had. I felt it, however, maybe I was just so busy taking care of my sick kids - I did not have time to think about how sick I was. Besides, I ran while sick and did that in the rain! The kids are all doing well, or just about over it.
Flexible running schedule. Translated? - two tough weeks mileage wise. I was able to get in 30 miles this past week though. Mainly, because I finally got in the needed long run yesterday AM. It was 16 miles. The last 3 of which, really beat me.
Yeah, I was not 100% healthy going into it. Yet, I had to get that run in. It ended really slow, and frankly started slow as well. In between, miles 3-12, I had some really nice moments of what it feels like when I am not running sick. Yet, overall, I know a SANE runner would not have been running at all, let alone 16 miles. Considering I also had a soccer game to coach (we lost, but had a great time) late in the afternoon - by the time I got to sleep last night - I felt pretty good. I am an active up and down the sideline coach. NO sitting or standing for me (as if you thought I could).
Today, my knees (both on the outer sides - IT Band?) and my right foot (again) feel beat up :(. Not sure what to make of the foot thing. It is right under the Arch again. The knees - overuse of a repetitive motion on asphalt eventually catches up to most runners. The dreaded runners knee or IT Band I am sure. Everything else good. Calves, ankles, Achilles, Hams and quads feel really strong actually.
Yet, due mainly to my foot concern I am going to take a few days off. Today, Monday and I even might take Tuesday off (yeah right, like I can actually do that). Will see how it goes DTD. It would be nice to hit things again Wednesday with some fresh legs (hopefully painless foot). I am sure my times will increase as well. So, in listening to my body - I should really plan on three down days. Yuck! I hate just listening sometimes.
Thanks to Jerbear though. I now have some nice creative ideas to do with my extra time. Although I don't think my foot is something I call an injury right now. No "I" word just yet please? Yes, I am probably in denial!
Sorry, about the nasty blisters Meg. Most everything heals though. Thanks for sharing the snow pix Happy Trails. Fat Guy Running - AM runs are the best. Tara, any REI shopping this past weekend, or Chilly Fries :)? Hope everyone else had a great weekend.
Shine, shine, shine on! Cheers!

Hope you're watching the Chargers win...while BS and I eat cheese fries with our blistered feet up in the air. JK, we aren't eating fries! But, GO CHARGERS!
Anyway, so sorry about the feet/IT band stuff. Rest and time off work and do you have a foam roller? I've been having over use issues this week and I'm trying the roller but OUCH, it sometimes hurst worse than the IT band. Hope your littlest peanut gets better...I'm kind of worried about school tomorrow, I had two kids out on Friday with the "you know what." Keep resting!
Better hit the foam roller on the IT band - you let it stay flamed up near the knee too long, you'll be taking more than a couple days off! Take care of your legs so you can Keep Running!
No REI for me this weekend, but I did eat a bowl of vegetarian chili sans the fries!!
I'm glad your kiddos are feeling a little better, being sick sucks so bad when you are that age.
I had a lot of pain under my arch last year and it turned out to be plantar fascitis. Flex your foot a few times before every run and expecially when you wake up each morning. I do these stretches and my foot is fine these days. Ice that IT band!
Meg - I did not get to see the Chargers this week :(. The knees are feeling fine today (Monday). The foot - still feeling it.
Happy Trails - thanks. I need to get one! Enjoy that snow!
Tara - thanks. I got an official, unofficial diagnosis from my inhouse med. staff. It is P. F.. Mild strain under my Arch. Time off, stretching and less miles once I start running again. Will see?
If the diagnosis is PF then you are best off taking that break. I know of people who weren't patient, came back too son, and ended up havin to take weeks that drug into months off. Be careful!
Your basketball names brign back a lot of memories! I grew up here in L.A. and was always tall and lanky (well, until everyone else caught up to me when I as a High School jr), so I played basketball fo a number of years. Like you, I gre up on a steady diet of Lakers, but back int he Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, Jim McMillian and Happy Hairston days. I caught Elgin Baylor right at the end of his career.
My uncle was a huge UCLA fan, so we would go see the Lakers against Miwaukee Bcks back when Lew Alcindor was center for the Bucks. It seems like today's game is so much different from the run and gun days of the late 70's.
Hope you and the kiddos are on the mend!
Glenn - Thanks. Sorry also to hear about Kareems health problems. The game today is hard for me to watch now. So, slow. One, maybe to passes top and shoot a 3 pointer. Too much dribbling by over rated point guards, and standing around with the forwards. I miss that Rebounds, the outlet pass and backdoor/pick and roll plays are lost art as well. I do like to watch Brandon Roy's game a lot these days though. Of course I am a UW Husky, so I am little biased :).
