....doesn't translate into a lack of running or effort. It has been a good week or more since my last entry. The reasons for not typing have more to do with time. Been busy. Last weekend we took off for Bambi's Birthday (my wonderful, smart, industrious and happy wife). It has been a very hard year of work for her. She deserves anytime off she can get and this past Labor Day Weekend was ideal for that.
We went to Sedona, Arizona. I feel the need to add the Arizona after Sedona. I have been surprised in talking to some well informed or enlightened folk back in Seattle who respond with blank speaking air when I say just Sedona. In fact, even after I explain where, they still have the blankness? I know I had heard of Sedona thru most of 1990's while living in Seattle. Oh well, if it has become a forgotten locale I guess - good! We had a great trip. Beautiful locale with lots of vibrant natural colors of Red Rock Mesa's/Peaks, Green trees, and Blue sky. Well, the latter 40% of the time. We hit some pretty intense thunderstorms late afternoons which added a nice thrill for our kids.
I got in two runs and one hike while there. The first run was unexpectedly intense for two dumb reasons on my part. First, the elevation. Forgot when I laced up the shoes that AM, I was standing at 4600 feet altitude. Vegas is about 2300 ft. The added 2300 feet was well felt within the first mile it seemed. However, it was a combination of that and my lack of topography perceptual judgement. The path I chose seemed flat at first. Mile into it I noticed a gradual incline was gradually getting longer and longer and longer. Till I got to the point - hey that was really a hill - wasn't it? So, that with the added feet - my nice easy vacation run was a slog. Down hill going back was fine. The next AM I decided to keep my hill theme going and also take advantage of the altitude. It was a good mix of hills, rest and flat runs.
In between it all, was a really fun family hike that was probably a 1.5 miles round trip. You have to be impressed with my kids. They thoroughly enjoyed it, and had fun together while hiking given their ages being 8 years - 3 years. The huge fly that looked like it could carry one of them away and all the lizards were a hit. Along with Mesa's, looking like red jungle gyms in reach and just beyond reach. A fun tantalizing goal to walk too. I even got a nice Father of the Year award cheer from a passer by given I was carrying the backpack (my sons Spiderman school backpack), three year old on my shoulders and had my 5 year old princess holding on to a loop in my carpenter jeans pant leg. It must have been a sight. Given that it was also raining by that point.
No, other pavement work since back. However, Precor buddy missed me so I put in two over 4 mile runs inside and one 3 miler. Today, Sunday, is day of rest in more ways than one. Tomorrow, Precor buddy and Tuesday pavement, Wednesday Rest and probably my next entry day. So, folks - Sedona. Great place to run, hike and also bike on and off road if you like. We will make that a new annual trip I think. Love to retire there some day. Well along with at least 10 other places I can think of.
Oh - Huskies were robbed yesterday. Thanks really bad PAC 10 officials. Love ya bye bye.
