Still Running (Ringing) in the New Year

Okay, time! Phew, finally got some for more of a posting than my last one. Except Husky Dawg (formerly Husky Puppy) is howling in the backyard for her daily walk/run.

Wow, it has been nearly a whole year with her now. She turned a year back on Nov. 15th. I gotta say, her and I have had our ups and downs. Forgot just how much work a puppy is, especially Huskies. Attention, and high maintenance. They are very smart with LOTS of boundless energy. However, toooo fun to ever say - I think another family should love you now. The kids love her and my wife - well - she adores her. Me? well pretty much the same, but I am the one who has to clean up and keep up with her the most. We would miss her if she wasn't with us though. She is spoiled.

My 2011 was not the best when it came to running, or really much anything else for that matter. I am glad it is a yester-year. Running - injuries defined my year. So, then you are asking - "why in your right mind do you think a 2012, of 365 days of running will be possible - or even smart?" Good question!

Thus far, I have held my own. Although, typically with a really sore and stiff calf after my Wednesday 8.5 miler at racing pace - I should be resting. Yet, here is my game plan for it all, and my way to keep it sane: a defined run - anything over 1 mile in length. Consistency is the goal.

My feeling after getting to know my body at my age for the last year - too much rest is bad. My body was made to work. I have a short, stout, rock of a frame. Well, with a few too many jiggly parts here and there as well. Yet, I have the body that should be digging ditches or hauling firewood and rocks all day instead of sitting. Much like Husky Dawg - I need to be active. I love pushing and pushing myself. Yes, yes I know the Achilles thing I have. The overuse reasoning behind it all. Well, I think that is horsehucky as the late great Col. Potter on M*A*S*H would say.

I really feel to keep my Achilles going, I need to be using it and stretching it. I have noticed the injury or pain always pops after a day of rest - not after a day of running. Yes, I can do stretches - which I have. However, it seems so pointless to me stretching with no running afters. So, for now anyways - after each daily stretching of my Achilles and Calf's - a run. At least mile in length or longer. I have been doing this now since before the New Year actually - 11 straight days of running; and yes, 11 straight days of no Achilles pain or weakness.

Today, another shorty run - mile, maybe mile in a half. Tomorrow a long run. My last before the next HM. Next week, well I should say every day after tomorrow and before next Sunday - 1 milers and two 5K's. Repeat post race until the next one a week later.Yep, back to back weekends of Half Marathons. AZ RR and Carlsbad. Can't wait!

Cheers!

Dogs are a lot of work, but so fun, too! They're less work when they get older. My dog just turned 7. Here's hoping you have a great year of running!
