... of my own ship? "Oh Captain! My Captain! ..." I appreciate Uncle Walt. Most do it seems. Many look to him reverently. I still find the old Northern Exposure episode (I think it was only the second one) amusing. When Chris in the Morning mentioned one of Walt Whitman's flavors to life on the airs of Cicely, Alaska. Funny how over a 100 years his works still find an impact on modern life. At least to Maurice Minnifield and Chris in the Mornings face, fist and wrist. What I also find fascinating was his life and service during the American Civil War.
Yet, for me personally, I would probably be far less ignorant of his works and life if were not for Dead Poet Society. Great opening lines for an interesting Character played by Robin Williams. Okay, I will be less defensive - I really liked the character. I love movies about education and teachers.
Anyways, Am I the Master of my own ship?
Runners are fun peeps. There seems to be so many types. However, two things I noticed about them all. For some, running is just who they are as an every day Joe or Jill. Meaning if they are Type A to begin with - Running will be an extension of that. Or, if they are less planning or not at all - they are just that as a Runner. However, I do think there are some (maybe few in numbers, or quite more than I think) whom become something else all together. Running awakens a sleeper inside. Not to mention a few things on the outside as well.
I have been reading over the goals list for the upcoming year of some. Seems kinda interesting and fun we publish them as well. It does hold us accountable through the year. It also helps us commiserate with others. All good and healthy stuff.
However, for me, myself and I at this point .... ?
Not sure? Really? I just cannot pin point or spot on exactly what my running will be about for 2012. Which begs the question? Does it need to be about anything?
Okay. I guess that would be too whimsical of me. Also maybe too consistent at the same time. As you know, if you have been reading my Blog previous - I dislike Running Plans. However, not goals. I do believe all of us have to have some goal or reason to float our own boats. I, also like - or rather thoroughly enjoy people and myself when boat floating is just a mere natural extension of whom we are. Not just that you ENJOY what you do. Something deeper. The thing that you do is NATURALLY you.
My goals then? To be in my natural state as a person. Running in perfect harmony with my being is just this - "I am, therefore I run". I am who I am. I am many things. One thing I do, is running.
To others it is not. It might be fast jogging, or barely walking. It might be standing in place. It might be fast. It might be short distances, or it might be to some, the most insane distance anyone would compel themselves to do. To me it is my goal - Running. No matter what I do, I need to B Who U B.
Now lets go have an adventure doing it this year. Lets have fun and learn something. Lets kick some asphalt, dirt or grass and B Who We B.
Cheers!

Did I not leave a comment here last night? I read and typed...I thought. Maybe I forgot to word verify! Ah..sigh...Not sure why I can get here by your comment, but not in my dashboard last night. I thought it was all figured out. More sleuthing to do I guess.
I like your "existence running" theory. I might try that again some day. I think that Jeff Galloway has latched on to it. :)
More potatoes. I need more potatoes. I will plant them this year!
Best wishes with the Alpo/Alamo bowl...:)
Well stated! I find that running helps me be more of who I am - for better or worse - depends on who is asking!!
Ahh, now I need to find some repeats of Northern Exposure ... it's been ages!
Keep on trucking!!! :)
