I have time today. Not much, but some. So a few bits and pieces as I spend the day off from running and instead ice some soreness in my left calf. I will try and do this numerically in list format. I like listing things in my life. It helps organize all that stuff moving about in real life.
1. Love Halloween-Jan 1st. My kiddos are always excited about something during this time. Tonight, the big Monster Ball (School Halloweenie Party). Even my big 5th Grader is still excited for it. Plus, as reality hits him - "Dad, this is my last Monster Ball at my school." Yep, I have a Junior High Scholar next year.
2. Schools - I love them. I have a big thing for educators as well. I have yet to meet one who wasn't my next best friend. In fact, most of my kids teachers have become friends of our family. We also have many teachers and educators in my family. So, it is kinda in the blood so to speak.
3. Running. Yesterday a successful 8 miler. Started out slow though and little achy. However, by 2-3 miles humming along with that Smooth (Hi Kristin) feeling. Had a few obstacles - puddles large and very small from all the rain of late. I even had to trek right in the middle of the desert to avoid a lake in my path. Found a skull. I am assuming the remains of someones lost and now demised dog - very sad. Not something I typically see on a run.
4. More running. Why do we as runners take this past time, hobby, physical test of personal determination soooo seriously sometimes? Meaning - very few of us doing this ( I mean next to no one) is getting paid to do this. Yet, we get so bent trying to excel so hard at it. The irony - we pay a fee to run races! No one is paying us (well 99.9% of us) to do Disney World, Rock and Roll whatever, Chicago, NYC or Boston Marathons. Yet, it still amazes me when many take this thing we pay to do serious beyond the need as compared to say doing the same for family, friends, work, your community, life and happiness. I sometimes get the bug I need to compel myself beyond limits - okay - I get it a lot. Yet, reality bites - when I just stop to think - this is a healthy pastime/hobby - not my career!!! It certainly helps in other areas of life - yet - it is not life or even the game of Life.
5.The Partridge Family songs are really undervalued and unappreciated. It is kinda like Big Star meets Burt Bacharach. Gotta love that Keith Partridge (David Cassidy) hair! Oh, check out a band called The Blue Nile sometime. Especially the album/disc Hats by them.
6. I kinda like hearing Martin Short as voice for The Cat in the Hat on PBS. "Go! Go! Go! on an adventure ..... ." He seems to know a lot about that.
7. I love my wife. I love my kiddo's. Thanks for a great life. Even if we don't have all the of substance, or physical stuff to show from all the hard work and fun. I still love that we are a family.
8. I love being a big kid at heart.
9. Bake Potato. Plain, just a little butter lightly salted and peppered can be a great meal for a runner.
10. Next Saturday might be an amazing leap of faith or a complete disaster. Yet, just making the leap - is amazing to me in of itself.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers!
PS - Jamie Donaldson have great fun at Javalina Jundred this weekend! You are the Queen Bee! Melanie knock down that first HM in style this weekend as well. You are more than prepared!

you have to take running seriously. Its part of the insanity
Chris - thanks. perfectly stated.
This season is great fun, now that our costumes have been made! I particularly love Thanksgiving. All about the food, playing football with my family (a little scarier than when my teenagers were still smaller than me...now it's like getting plowed by a truck, and no, we don't "tackle", but that's not always clear from the game!).
I feel for ya with a middle schooler in waiting. In the next two years, both of my older boys will graduate from high school. I'm NOT old enough to be a mom of college boys...and yet, they will be.
More than once in a race I've mused to myself...and I'm paying to do this to myself!! But I love pushing myself to find that next thing that I only thought I couldn't do.
And THANKS for the good words about teachers! :) I'm partial to them, myself. Enjoy your weekend!
David's little brother, Shaun, was my idol when I was a kid, even had a shirt with his picture on it I wore to bed. Ha. Always love your list, especially when you mention your family and how much they mean to you. That's what it's all about!! :)
Have a great weekend at the Monster Ball!!
#4. NYC ING marathon is $245. Yow!
#7. Me too. Not your wife & kids.. mine. (but I'm sure your wife & kids are nice too)
Great list.. Happy Friday.
I love lists, too. I find a lot of comfort in them.
I hope your calf is feeling better.
I see school as a necessary evil. A means to an end. I'm not fond of it.
You realize that knowing Partridge family songs seriously dates us .... The younger folk are probably scratching their heads!!!
Halloween - Feb 1 is Dark Night of the Runner's Soul in the mountains. Good thing there are warm family events thrown in there, because the cold, harsh runs would not sustain for the winter!!!
HT - funny!
I am also a fan of lists, and this is a fun post, Slomo. Thank you for the shout-out! I hit my smooth around mile 5 of a 10 mile run last night, and it made me think of you and how much I appreciate your blog. Hope your training is going wonderfully! Happy Halloween to you and your family :)
