It is the time of year here in Vegas. Granted it has not been as much of the time of year as years past. However, caliente - hot is still the season. Sorry Jamie Donaldson, but I am not a fan of anything in the desert above 105 degrees. This is my personal melting point. So, since my wife had the time off for our canceled SF Marathon weekend - getting to something cool and refreshing - a must. A must before 110 degree days come again.
Don't look at the messy kitchen trying to get the cake and dinner ready. Instead look at the happy 7 year old! Yes, that is one big monkey and the apple of my eye having a great time. She had a great day and weekend. We tend to take 2-3 days to celebrate Birthdays in our family. No different this past weekend.
At the last minute we decided to take the party on the road Sunday. Irvine Regional Park and Orange County Zoo. I know a long drive from Vegas for a picnic on green grass, pony rides, paddle boats. Yet, when you live in a place without much of any of these things - it was a perfect 4 hour drive there and back.
Fun thing happened along the way - we all got our smiles back. Trading in 110 for 75 degrees and beach was all that was needed.
I was also able to get some running in as well. The peroneal tendon problem seems to be licked for the time being. I was able to get in 3 miles on the treadmill today. No pain. See how it reacts tomorrow.
I have also been putting together my what next for running goals and race events list. Next two races are Disneyland HM Labor Day weekend and Long Beach Full Marathon mid October. After that -
Snow Canyon HM near St. George, Utah in November. December will most likely be a month off except for the Santa Dash 5K. January, Carlsbad HM and Surf City HM February (only two weekends apart). Then drum roll please - maybe - my first trail run and Ultra. End of March for the Chuckanut 50K back in my home state of Washington. After that everything gets hazy on the Slomo crystal ball.
We have definitely decided No, on doing Disneyworld though. Just one too many races here in our 3-4 hour driving range yet to kick.
Hope everyone had a great weekend as well. Especially, my friends doing SF, Desert News and Ragnar. Have a great week!
Cheers!
PS - the bike has not been purchased - yet. It looks like after a few test rides and still more browsing, I am now closer to a Trek over my Specialized Steel throwback.

It's always good to get smiles back, they sure can be ellusive sometimes!I am happy to hear the tendon is behaving better, hope it stays that way. Sounds like a great race plane, ooh and your first 50k! My very first is also planned for March 2011, we'll need to compare notes!
Nice little retreat to the oasis - glad the Slomo crew got their smiling selves cooled off. Are you just teasing us about the trail run . . . ??
Getting smiles back is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world and I am happy to hear that you and yours are all collectively grinning.
Chuckanut is a really cool race (especially in March :-P ). I am thinking about running it too actually.
Ran the Ragnar Northwest Relay this past weekend. Have you thought about the Las Vegas one?
Nice to see you made the getaway! Awesome what a sort trip and something different can do. And believe me - the weather in OC this weekend beat the crap out of the cold and fog of SF.
No bike, yet??
YES, we did miss you at the meet up. Glenn and I discussed your "real" name and he told me that your kids are wonderful(no surprise there). He said they were POLITE, looked you in the eye when they spoke to you and were very sweet. We all decided that LB will be the next meet up for SO CAL/Vegas/Colorado? runners. We're going to go the day before so we can visit!
I can't believe YOU guys drove here and we are desperate for sun and would gratefully wallow in 110 degree heat right now. Geeesh, the grass is always greener...
rpd - great to hear from ya! It has been ahwile. Yeah, I have to wait and see how I do training wise obviously, but how can you beat chuckanutt and Bellingham anytime of year. I thought you have done this one before? Pretty cool the RD is none other than Krissy Mohl. Yeah for a Husky!
Aw, I'm glad you got some respite from the extreme heat and had a good time on your little road trip.
Family vacay is always just the ticket! I am so glad you all had a great time! Happy belated to your little darling!
I was sorry to have missed you in San Fran, but maybe next year if it fits into your schedule. I may be trying again to get down there for LV marathon. Depends on hubby.
I'm glad you got away and restored the smiles. I know a southern california beach would do that for me too!
