First Run in HOW LONG!?

Okay, I will fully admit it - running has not been high on my list for a bit. Yet, when I logged my getting back into it 5K, I was surprised just how low of a priority running had become. Log doesn't lie. My last run - two weeks ago yesterday? Yikes! Must remember to keep running always - at least in my mind anyway. Two weeks! I have a Marathon to run in 100 days.

Right leg issues, being sick did play a role. Yet, I am also surprised how far away other things - important realworld things - occupied any free time to run, and free time to think about running.

The run. Nice run given it was my first in two weeks (even though I was thinking one week while doing it). The first 1.25 miles was a little odd though. It was almost as if my legs forgot how to run. They felt weird. A little jiggly and for a lack of better word uncoordinated. Odd, since running doesn't really require much other than lifted knees upward with a forward motion with each foot step. Yet, I felt like putting on some big framed black glasses held together with white tape, and jacking up my shorts 3-4 inches above my belly button (ouch!). Runner Nerd!

Oh well, sure sign of getting old, but I think it was my antibiotics as well. Last time I had taken ones this strong was 3-4 years ago for an intestinal issue. This was a different med, but it left me with similar side effects. Again - don't take lightly little cuts while shaving. Change your razor blade often or go to disposable as I have done now.

The official I am not doing SF was made last night at dinner. I had still been holding out some glimmer of hope for doing this. It just isn't happening this year. Although my wife wants me to consider flying myself  in to do it. My feelings against this: 1) if I was doing the Full yes, but too much to spend on a HM trip. 2) Lack of training is obvious although I know I could gut out a HM if needed. 3) and most importantly my running these race/events is a family thing. If my family can't make it - I don't make it.

So now what? All effort is geared towards Long Beach in the Fall and also Disneyland HM Labor Day weekend. I am putting some thought towards Calico Racing E.T. Marathon and Half in August though. It is here in Nevada. North of Las Vegas in middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night. The name is for it's location. The Extraterrestrial Highway where some SEE things in the sky at night. If I don't actually do it, I might go up and volunteer for it. Should be a fun one to volunteer for, and get to know more local runners. Who knows what I might SEE as well? (queue the X-Files Music now).

Well, before I take off. A quick congrats to all those doing Badwater starting this Monday-Thursday. You are a special breed of runner and person. Special good luck to Jamie Donaldson and her entire crew. She is doing her 4th one and has been the Women's overall winner two years in a row now. Or, has it been three! Anyway, she is a really fantastic runner, teacher and Super Hero. Enjoy the desert and 120 degrees of it! I was hoping to have time to see the start at least this year and meet the runners (or as Meg Runs would say "Stalk them"). I can't. Good luck!

Thanks again for all your kind comments of support of late as well. Each one has been very appreciated. I have enjoyed reading your blogs of late as well. I have tried to leave comments with each read. If I didn't - doesn't mean I am not following. Have a great weekend and kick some asphalt or dirt.

Cheers!

I just noticed that you're planning on doing the santa 5k in vegas. I'll be in town for the marathon the next day so I'll have to come cheer you on!

Fly to Colorado and run monster trails with HT - there's an idea. OK, OK - I got sidetracked... Glad you were able to run. Don't worry about racing before you get healthy - I am just now coming out of the fog from 5 weeks of antibiotics, so I just want to run.

Here's a break from the heat for you - snow on Pikes Peak yesterday - all the way down to tree line. 65 for the high in town. Beauty, eh?

"Runner nerd"...lol. Reminds me of my "Phoebe legs" trying to run during the bike trip.

Glad you're back at it!

Hey there Slomo! I'm sorry that you aren't running SF, but I think that you have made a good decision and have based it on some very good and sound reasons. Especially the last one about your family!

Take care of yourself, you'll be back at it in no time. Don't feel bad about taking time off, give your body a chance to heal.
Tara :)
