Silly me! Thinking my IT Band issue had healed. My run last night was not good. Very painful in the last 1.5 miles. Yet, like the Neanderthal I am while running - I kept running on it. Right leg was okay for a few miles, than I hit some sloped road. Which is the cause of all this pain - thanks Highway 163 at the SD RR :(!!! I will curse this course forever!
I did take a week off prior to this run. The last 2 days of which no pain or much of anything. My pre-run stretching was my first clue it was not ready for the 5 miles, but I guess I am an idiot. My left leg - perfect. Everything felt very fluid. Yet, on my toe raises with the right - I could feel something not right with my calf. Still tight, but also it felt like a wadded slab of ground beef attached to my leg. Just was not flowing - nothing smooth.
Anyway, the only thing I can do is take more time off for both the IT and calf. My Hamstrings on the other hand felt great. I was told by a PT friend no massaging the IT Band - it would probably aggravate it more. So, no more rolling pins or foam rollers on that. I can massage the @#$% out the slab of ground beef that is my right calf. Ice both areas and rest. I was instructed to take another Full week off at least, preferably two!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

Ooohhh, that's frustrating. :( It stinks that mind over matter works for things like lungs and legs but not injuries. Does "rest" allow for bike rides and such so you don't go crazy over the next couple weeks? Wishing you fast healing!!
I foam rolled the crud out of my IT until it submitted to my wishes - that was the only thing that worked because I had so much adhesion along the quads. I would say roll away *unless* you think that you tore something. Bike rides with the fam?
I hear you! My IT band has been really painful the last week. I had a DNS for the Utah Valley marathon. Grrrr.
I have been rolling mine out the last couple of days, it seems to be helping mine.. and I have been having ultrasound treatments..don't know if that is doing anything for it though. Good luck, hope your IT and calf heal quickly!
Rest up Slomo! Can you do some pool running (deep water running)? Feel better!
Happy Trails - My PT friend is not a fan of using rollers for this injury. Even though she did say some have had success using it. She worries about prolong use of rollers on the Band, because you are essentially doing to the Band the thing which caused the injury in the first place - rubbing it the wrong way. Just her opinion and the Ortho doc she works for.
Stacey - Ultrasound is an option but I would acutally have to pay for that :). I like to xhaust all my free advice and services first. Sorry about the Valley Marathon. I have thought about doing that one in the past. I get up to the Provo area (Utah County) three times a year typically. My inlaws live near Lehi.
Jen (my favorite Artist from Mississippi) I can't swim. Oh I know how. I just can't. Slomo is an anvil in H2O. I would find a way to injury myself whether running, walking or swimming in a pool.
Kate - I was told not to bike. Man the cookies looked good though. Have fun!
Thanks for the advice and consuling. I am going to disobey my advice and try to put in a few miles tonight. Yes - I have an addiction ( a problem) - at least it is a healthy one (I think?) :). Keep kickin'
Rest, ice and anti-inflammatories my friend. Even if you go to a doctor, they're going to prescribe rest. Have you seen this website?
