Cold Smold

Cold, as in, I have one. My head, sinuses and ears are not loving life. Scratchy sore throat. Thanks kids. Your Dad loves you.

Yes, as I am sure you noticed I do love my kids a lot. My wife has an occupation/career that keeps her constantly on the go - literally. So, I am the one with our kids the majority of the time most Mothers are. We feel very blessed as a family and couple we can do this as well.

Yet, whenever any of our kids gets a Cold - who is the first to get it? Me! At least it is not the Flu. However, this adds to the Prince of Denmark posting from yesterday.

"TO RUN, OR NOT TO RUN."

My son and I had a very good chat last night. Kids are too smart these days. I really believe they get smarter with every passing generation. He told me, Dad your running is different. There is NO other time of the year they have this Marathon. He thought Soccer Tourney was different since he was able to play all the games all season and 99% of the tourney. He seemed to understand or feel the difference. Or, his Mom got to him first?

Seems my wife REALLY wants me to run it. Mainly due to the fact most she works with are running it. She does not want to feel left out of the loop. Interesting since she has not a running gene or bone in her body. She just called me asking when I was going to the Expo? She also wanted to know if I wanted to do a fun, 5K Santa Run tomorrow morning to help out a local charity her hospital helps with. She may not have the itch to run for herself (although I think it is coming), at least she is very supportive of me.

Question? have any of ya ever run a race, half or full marathon with a Cold or sick? I have not, and rarely run/train sick. Well most of the time I don't anyway. Was it worth it for you? Or, did your Cold turn into double Pneumonia (sp) as your Mom probably told you so once upon a time. FYI, they say low to mid 30's at the start of the race.

Thanks for your comments on my little girls case of the 1st Grade Blues. This AM, she was more concerned about missing line up bell. She went running off without me. Cured. Plus, very happy again. Yeah, she has her Dadda (what she has been calling me for two weeks now) wrapped around her finger. She is my only girl though folks. I have three indestructible boys, but only one precious sweet girl. I want her to be independent like her Brothers are, but man it is hard. Especially, after the last few days. She is very smart and does really well at school. Her teacher tells me she is one of the brightest stars she has, if not the brightest. As one of my Sisters, who has raised 8 told me once - "it all evens out in the end. Just be consistent." You should know Sis. You have raised a Doc, Lawyer, Nurse and now have one in Pharmacy School.

Have fun out there! Cheers!

To Run or Not To Run?

The general rule that I've heard is that if the cold is in your head you can run if you want to. If it goes south into your chest then don't run. So, I've actually raced with a head cold before and found that it helps clear me out. Running with something like Sudafed in your system is pretty rough as it dries you out something fierce and you can't get enough water in. So, questions:

1) how does your head feel? Will it feel better with exercise?

2) what is the propensity for colds to head south for you?

Go out for a test trot and see and let's not forget all the chicken soup and hearty beef broth you can stand (assuming you are in to that sort of thing).

Barefoot running. I've been playing with it to but haven't attempted a trail run. Check out the Vibram Five Fingers and eeeaaassseee into it.

Good luck @ LV.

Glad to hear that your daughter is developing a stiff upper-lip.

Seems like every HM I've done has been mid-sept. so my alergies have been crazy out of control, so I've been coughing up loogies and snot rocketing my way to the finish line. that was totally doable, but I don't know about anything more than that. Good luck deciding though. And there is honestly nothing like a father-daughter bond. I'm the only girly and me and my date are still insanely close. Glad you have a little one to share that with.

Yeah, so happy everyone is happy again..except for the cold. I don't run when my cold is in my chest or if I have sinus issues but a drippy nose doesn't hold be back.
Feel better, you wife is being amazingly supportive of your running/races...enjoy that, you're blessed!

"In your chest, take a rest." That's the general rule that I've heard. A few weeks back toward the end of my marathon training I ended up with a chest cold. There is *no way* I would have run a race with that going on. In fact, I recall one training run where I had to throw in the towel after the first mile becuase of all the coughing and hacking that was going on.

I think if I had a mild head cold (stuffines or runny nose) I might run a half marathon, but I certainly wouldn't turn it into a PR attempt. I definitley would *not* do a marathon....

And your sis is correct. Be loving and supportive all the time. The rest they'll figure out with your guidance.

Oh - and thanks for your ideas a couple days back. That is what I am grapling with right now. Until now it has been about PRs. But I'm not sure that is why I want to *keep* running. Yeah I can say it's for the health benefits, but there are a lot of ways to get those benefits - for example adding some cycling, rowing, etc.

Decisions decisions!
