Big Sur (Acutally it is Just Monterey)

Moving forward. Trying to get my mind off the race (Disney Half) around the corner some. I have officially registered for the Big Sur Half in November. It has been on the calender of events. Yet, I was not sure if I was actually going to do this till today. Pretty sure I have the time off needed from the realworld to make it happen. The race itself is not on the Full Big Sur Marathon course, which is a dream race for me in the future. Monterey and the Pebble Beach area - will do me just fine.

I was a big Steinbeck fan growing up and Cannery Row was a favorite. Something about that area for me. We all have that place to be. Central Cali Coast is it for me from Half Moon Bay to Santa Barbara. I have a big thing for the Rocky Mts - Colorado and Montana especially. My home state of Washington is hard to beat and Oregon Coast is next in line. I have some exciting International locales I have traveled as well. Yet, something keeps drawing me back to the rugged shoreline along California Highway 1. So, yeah, this race was a no brainer for me once I read about it after I started running again. It should be a more relaxing race as well. How much can life get worked up running along the shoreline near Pebble Beach? The ultra cool looking medal says it all - lay back and enjoy the run by the sea.

I have added a few items to the blog. I am typically not happy with most photos of me over the last 15 years. However, I could not resist to add this pix of myself and my meanings (kids) to life. The kids actually look like the love their Dad? (smile). Anyway, it is my profile pix. Plus, today, on my wife's Birthday - 111 degrees according to our backyard gauge. Vegas does get snow photo is needed. Snow on the Palm Trees near our house is a nice reminder August does end in the desert. Also, to my friends and family who have bugged me about my boring blog layout - I give in. I will at least try to include more personal pix at times. Since this is a Running Blog - I will keep them mostly running related as not bore anyone else.

Training. Yesterday, I was actually feeling some twinges of pain in my left Achilles at times. Pain would pop up when I just sitting. I hope this pain is not telling me something. It is a new one. Not the typical discomfort of being stiff. Something else. However, today, I have only felt it once ever so briefly. My calves are very stiff as well. I have one last 13 miler early AM tomorrow. Will see how it goes? I will be taking pretty much all of next week off to get very fresh and ready for the Disney Half. My mileage for the month is now over last months 94 miles. So, tomorrows run will shatter July. A nice feeling of progress. Whoo - Hoo!!

Tonight we celebrate. Hopefully my wife has had a great Birthday. Cheers!

Wow, I can't believe you live in 112 degree heat the whole summer! It's about 85 here and we're complaining and whining.

Cute pix of your family and HB to your wife!

Hope the training for Big Sur goes well, it's so pretty up there!

Well - just so you don't feel left out - it was 93 today in Newport Beach. 95 yesterday. It's hot everywhere.

I agree with the Central Coast. I like it a little further south - Cambria, SLO maybe even Santa Maria. I just can't get my wife to think that the world exists north of the Orange County border!

If you are feeling some tweaks and niggles - could it be shoes? Do you have a lot of miles on them? I know being a heavier runner, I typically only get about 300 miles out a pair before I start feeling pain in places I normally don't. That's the sign for me to switch the shoes out.

And thanks for the info on rest. My main concern is that this is a lot of mental crap (today was the first USRD taken for physical reasons). I found that with my first marathon, the mental stuff is something that really needs to be under control. I actually did some blood lactate testing this week and have dtermined the problems are not physical....

Time to flip the brain the bird and get back out there. No matter how slow and tedious!

The Monterey/Carmel area is one of our favorite places (aside from the mountains of course!!) - whenever we let our thoughts wander to some beach time, that piece of coast is where our minds turn! Are you doing the trail half marathon?

Happy Trails - No on the trail run. This is a road race. It is out and back from what I hear. Which is typically the most boring ones as I am sure you would agree. However, this outback will start and end on Cannery Row. In between is nothing but beautiful coastline. It is a flat course as well. Some day I may do the trail runs in that area. I have heard Stinson Beach(?) is a nice one, but fairly difficult.

Thanks for stopping by! Thanks for sharing your latest pix from Colorado as well. Really sorry about that beetle problem back there as well. Keep Kickin!

Meg Runs - It isn't 112 all the time. However, it can seem like it by Sept. Early AM is the only way to keep up a training schedule from end of June till most of Sept. I would love to deal with any weather San Diego thru at me. You live in a little bit of heaven there.

Cheers! Thanks for stopping by.

Glenn - Happy to hear from ya. Thanks for the shoe advice. However, I am wearing some new ones. Todays run was good.

Speaking of little bit of heaven - Newport Beach/Balboa is near to it as well. My wife grew up in the OC. She left the area for college and really had not been back till we moved to Vegas 5 years ago. Her family moved to Texas after she finished High School.

She grew up near Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. That area has changed since she moved. With our frequent trips I have gotten to know the OC quite a bit. I have to admit I can empathize with your wife. I bug my wifes parents alot over leaving the OC for El Paso, Texas!!

SLO is a favorite college town of mine for years now. One of the last great indie record stores left is there. I like Cambria as well. However, my favorite town on the Cali Coast is without question Capitola for me. It reminds me of the same town I grew up on the Puget Sound, just North of Seattle. Except Capitola has much better weather! and surfing.

Life is the Beach!

Meg Runs - ps, you are living my dream job. Kindegarten is where it is at! Thanks for teaching! A sister of mine past away recently of Cancer. She taught Kindegarten for 15 years. She taught right up till she past away. Nothing could keep her from those kids. Thanks again for being a teacher. We need more of them.

Looked up the course - can't get much better than that for a road run. That area out along Pacific Grove to Asilomar is absolutely beautiful! The rec trail out along 17 Mile Drive is awesome too, if you have time (or energy) left. Keep up the runs.

Also, sorry to hear about your sister. LiveStrong in her memory!
