Anyway, both injuries have been described generically as "runners knee". One article says take two weeks off, the other doesn't mention anything about time off. It prescribes post run icing for 15 minutes of both knees. Plus, a night time heating pad for 30 minutes prior to bed. It does say to ease back on mileage, no hill or speedwork for awhile. Both say sign you need to get new kicks. I have decided to incorporate both remedies.
I did have a nice run this AM though. It was a short (fun, I am actually calling 5 miler short these days) run, but I was concentrating on getting the pace up. It ended up being the fastest 5 miler I have done thus far. The pain did not start until after the run when I was helping my youngest take a bath. Moving around, assisting him I started to feel tightness first, then the pain. I only feel it as the day has progressed going downstairs. Well, anyway, I will follow the regimen from above.
I ordered some new shoes. I was lucky to find them. The shoes I run on, New Balance 1062's have been discontinued. Which does mean I can get them cheap - if I can find them. Which I was able to do at a New Balance sight. I ordered two pairs. I think I have some life left in the old kicks I have now, but will gradually work in the new ones. They should get me through both Half and Full Marathon - I hope?! I don't want to hunt and peck around for a new pair of kicks a week or so before my first Marathon in 13 years! Anyway, I was planning an 11 mile run for tomorrow AM. Not now. I will put it off a day or two.
Have another funeral to attend tomorrow. Not family - thank god (literally) - don't want to lose anymore siblings. This one is for a friend from Church. Odd thing his death. He had some stomach issues for a few months. He never bothered to get it checked out. However, it got worse and finally went to his Doc. They ran blood tests. A week later he was called into the Docs office for the test results. However, during the week in between visits he came down with Swine Flu and was having some breathing issues. So, by this new test result visit, he was sent straight to the hospital. The test results showed his white blood count was extremely low. It would be diagnosed as Leukemia. He spent the next two weeks in the Hospital on Vents. The Swine Flu developed into pneumonia. Everything was tried, but he did not make it. So, this Father of four leaves them and his loving wife behind now. The kids actually seem okay enough. Kinda surprising really. Their Mom, his wife, looks awful right now. Almost looks like she has aged 20 years in two-three weeks of all this. They will all need support right now from family and friends.
Anyway, obviously, this is another witness to us all, how short and precious life is. He was a very healthy guy all his life. Active guy, who liked rock climbing. Very young looking 50 year old. Brings even more front and center what my Doc told me not long ago. At 42, now that the first half of your life is behind ya - what do you want to do with the second half?
Eight days from today, I will be celebrating my 43rd Bday. At least for the last 6-8 months or more I have been living it. Running! I have been a runner off and on most of my life. As noted in this blog, and by the title - a long time not. I have many other things to add in the coming year as well. However, as the basis to all I do for the next half of life - I will be running.
